Photo editing on the iPad Mini

I'm looking into travelling for several months next year. I'll be updating my blog regularly with photos that I take on my travels. I'd prefer not to bring my MacBook Pro.

Does anyone have advice on whether the iPad Mini – or even the iPad Air/Pro – is adequate for editing RAW files in Lightroom?

You’ll need a Creative Cloud subscription for starters. While the iPad can store RAW files, the built-in Photos app can’t view, edit or import them to other apps in RAW format, only JPEG. So the only way to get RAW files into Lightroom for iOS is via Creative Cloud or a desktop version of Lightroom.

And what's "via creative cloud" ? Or how I mean. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. So basically, I could sign up for CC for the several months I'll be travelling and use the Lightroom iOS app? That could definitely work for me.

In terms of processing power, is the Mini powerful enough?

Uploading the RAWs to Creative Cloud using the web interface. Obviously this requires getting access to a PC or going to an internet cafe from time to time, but at least you don’t have to lug a laptop around. Not an ideal solution but workable.

Yes, but it would be a bit messy. Tbh most people I know who have travelled with just an iPad have found managing their photos on it difficult. Even if you aren’t dealing with RAWs, the built-in storage will probably prove limiting and you’ll have to upload to the cloud on a daily basis. WiFi is usually plentiful while travelling. Fast, reliable WiFi not so much.

Can you not use Web interface on the iPad?

I'm not sure. Even if you could you wouldn't be able to upload the RAWs from it. You need a desktop browser.

Cool.. How come, the RAW files can't be transferred to the iPad? Even the iPad Pro?

    It's a limitation of iOS.

the MacBook 2015 is tiny, delicious and can presumably easily edit RAW in lightroom. Perfect excuse to buy one

Yeah but a pricey at the moment. I'm hoping it comes down a bit in the next refresh.

Yeah I won't be buying the current version myself. But definitely the kind of thing I want in the future. Couple of the lads using them in work, I love it.

It's a beautiful machine. I realise I'm coming off as a huge Apple fanboy but they do design amazing hardware.
