Just got a Galaxy S6. I'm new to the whole android parade and I'm just wondering how to get apps to have lock screen Widgets when they are playing. Especially Spotify and podcasts. Much appreciated.

Make sure you allow content to appear on your lock screen, by going into Settings > Sound & Notifications > Notifications on lock screen, and selecting "Show Content".
Then check that Spotify has permissions to display notifications, by looking under Settings > Sound & Notifications > App Notifications, finding Spotify, then turn off Block Notifications and Hide content on lock screen.

These settings allow you to keep sensitive stuff off the lock screen, like email, SMS, etc.

That worked perfectly. Really enjoying the freedom on android coming from iphone.
