    Well,

I use my smartphone as an internet hotspot.

My old dear has just got herself a laptop and an evening course in computers - fair play to her - however using a smartphone seems to be just that step too far for her.

She has an old style nokia mobile.

Are there any old style mobiles which you can use as a hotspot or tether to a laptop or is this solely a smartphone function?

There is lots of devices that support tethering but its a phone feature and if network allows it.

MY alcatel one touch phone has wifi tethering ,bought phone in 2012.
    ITS feature of smartphones only.
so to wireless, wifi tethering ,
    thethering on/off
turn on phone press wireless settings ,
    data on, first.
you need 2 bars on the 3g signal icon to make it worthwhile .
Any phone from 3 buy 20 euro credit ,
get 30 days 3g data acess.

there,s usually an icon tray to turn on data on ,off .
only use it for wen acess ,
ie it should be off most of the time as it uses up battery .

Some places, rural area,s the 3 g signal is close to zero .

    or buy a 3g modem,
sends wifi signal to the laptop .

2gig for 1 month on the modem is pretty small.
    1 gig =1000meg,
    one 10 minute youtube video= 15meg approx.
