I've a 2007 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI . The coolant warning light has come on it beeps like mad at first and then flashes. I've checked the coolant and its above the line also the engine is cold. What could this be and is it safe to drive as it tells me to stop driving !!! Thanks

If coolant level is at normal then you can run the car.
Let it idle for a while and check if there is heat coming from the heater as it warms up .
The heat from the heater shows that coolant is circulating.
If air output from the heater goes cold with it set to hot it probably means coolant level has gone down a lot - then time to stop and check .
You should be fine to drive keeping the above in mind .

    Intermittent faulty sensor/connection etc.
Could sort itself out again or you may have to get it checked out (scanned for codes etc ).

I'd a feeling it could just be a sensor. Ive only bought the car so I'll be getting serviced anyway.

If you've just got the car then it could have been doing this for a while - and previous owner got used to it to the point of ignoring it :).
Can be very annoying on a car new to you though .

Keep at it, or maybe just buy a whole new unit.

The missus' stiff bristled Colgate brush did the trick on mine.

Strangely she ended up in A&E with mystery stomach cramps not long after, but the important thing was that the car was ok.

Try my suggestion of a screwdriver to scrape the probes.

If none of that works then a new coolant tank is only around €30 from VW and will sort it.

Is the sensor included with the tank? That's not like VW.

The sensor is part of the tank.

VW are very reasonably priced for parts in my experience.
