Job seekers transition and temp work!

    Hi all,

I'm asking on behalf of a friend in a bit of a bind! She asked me to look into it but honestly I can't find the info I need so giving it a shot here.

She is a single parent was switched onto the Job seekers transition payment this year. She was working up until the Summer when she was laid off along with some other staff.

A job that she applied for in September but didn't get has called to say the person they hired has just gone on sick leave and they need someone urgently. She was next on the panel and they would like her to start next week. It would only be for 3 weeks and would end the week before xmas week.

So my question is, what is the situation with temporary work and the transition payment? She is quite happy about this work as she is really struggling coming up to Christmas but she is afraid that if she tells SW now, they will stop her payment and she will having nothing to survive on until she gets paid at the end of the 3 weeks.

The job is only 2 days per week but she thinks it will pay well considering the position and the short notice- does the wage matter or only how many days worked? Do you have to tell them as soon as you start or can you inform them once you've been paid and back pay them what would have been taken off? Is there any way of them finding out she is doing those 2 days a week and closing her claim before she has a chance to tell them?

I know a lot is covered in JSA but I'm not sure the terms are exactly the same. Based on those figures, she would lose the payment but earn the same amount from the work. However, she would also have to pay childcare and petrol costs to get her to work so she would actually be at a loss. Doesn't make sense? Sorry if it's confusing, would love to give her some good news that she could make a little extra with this job to help her with xmas expenses.

    Thanks!

She will need to tell sw if she takes up the job offer. SW will receive notification from Revenue that she is registered with an employer. Her payment shouldnt be stopped straight away. She will be asked to provide her two first paylips asap and means will be deducted from her payment. If for the period of employment she is deemed means in excess then she can apply for back to work family dividend whereby she receives payment for her child/children and on completion of the contract she can get OFP JST again.

Just a quick clarification on JST she can work as many hours/days as she wants.
