Oh, believe me I have. I haven't rented a movie in years, it doesn't mean I dont miss it though.

Some people seem to panic, when you attempt to explain it. That would be my definition of technophobe.

Have fond memories of renting playstation games off them every Saturday when I was a kid.

I wouldn't say my grandparents are afraid of it, they just have no interest and I envy them for that.

Yes, that was very handy. Though I was renting in the 16 bit era, therefore my experience was vastly superior.

    ;-)

if you're stuck out the country on 1mb broadband (with an awful cap on top of that) netflix is more or less out, the less legal but almost as easy streaming sites are also out and your only real option is learning to use torrents, and learning the difference between "legit" torrents and spyware ridden syphilitic ones is a skill some people appear not to be able to grasp.

i still get upset you can't rent consoles anymore. there's one ps4 game i want to play but ****ed if i'm buying a console for the privilege.

I find it hilarious that they drop this on staff a month before Christmas and will still expect them to work crazy hours and prepping for black Friday and January sales.

Consoles will soon be a thing of the past anyway, they'll just be seamlessly built into TV's, with all games stored on a Steam like service.

I've been buying stuff there for years, as opposed to renting

Thought they were all gone already.

I always preferred the independent video shops that had the black book behind the counter and did 5 films for 5 days deals.

I did use to rent Sega Megadrives from Xtravision though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,398 ✭✭✭✭Turtyturd

Reckon most of their money would have been sales now rather than rentals. Used to enjoy renting a game out for a week when I was younger and couldn't afford to buy it, or when I was older and knew something wouldn't be worth full price but still wanted to check it out.

Can't remember the last time I actually bought something in there but was in checking the price of a game recently and it was well over the odds so no sympathy. Hopefully gamestop follows suit.

Netflix is f*cking useless. I don't see why everybody loves it. I haven't rented a movie in years either - I actually don't even know where my closest Xtra Vision is anymore - but it was much better than being force fed a heap of sh*t from Netflix in my view.

I read a great article last night talking about how much better it was to rent a movie rather than Netflix. You felt more "into" the movie because you had to get up and dressed before going in to the shop, browse and then finally pick a movie out.

Nowadays if a movie on Netflix doesn't grab you within the first 5 minutes, it's just on to the next one they have on your "you may be interested in" list.

Very true. It's the same as sharing on Facebook. It requires no effort whatsoever, and thus sharing ideas has become lazy and diluted, with little thought put into it.

Ditto the French flag thing on peoples profile pics. These are supposedly a tribute to the dead, so why are people smiling in their photos? Again, little or no thought. Mindlessly clicking buttons...

Have you tried the USA Netflix, has a much better selection. Sky have the rights to show new movies over here so the selection is poor

Aren't people who use Netflix the online equivalent of people who rent dvds?

Capped internet. We don't all have bottomless pockets to chuck money at eir and up here it is galling to see cheap uncapped internet five miles away across the border.

Netflix is far from being "all that". A quick flick through it at my girlfriend's gaff in Edinburgh sent us to the BBC iPlayer.

Pretty much, it's handy when you have kids though. I can't remember the last time I watched a movie on it.

Our nearest xtravision is a machine in the shopping centre. Its an extra vision video renting machine. Oddly enough we are using that more than we used the shop when it was open.

I used it for the free month when it launched, and then shared my brothers account for a while, similarly for the kids and tv shows, not movies. But I haven't bothered with it since getting an android box. I think these will have a similar impact on Netflix as downloading did on xtravision when it became more widespread.

Does anyone have a list of stores closing?

BBC have listed the 8 Northern Ireland stores closing but there does not seem to be a list of the 28 RoI stores closing.

More than half of remaining stores are closing. There will only be about 25 or so Xtra-vision stores left. Only a matter of time before these 25 close too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,590 ✭✭✭✭kneemos

Charity shops have reams of DVD's for a quid.Never looked though,so no idea of what kind of quality they'd have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,431 ✭✭✭MilesMorales1

Its funny that the store in that image closed like, 3 years ago.

edit - I don't rent DVD's anymore, but xtravision online does crazy cheap pre owned blu rays, much cheaper than cex/HMV a lot of the time, hope that stays.

Was anyone else surprised that they had only had 90 people working in the 28 stores? Hardly seems enough to keep the doors open (or sweep away all the cobwebs)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,436 ✭✭✭c_man

Was at a houseparty and guy was making a point of showing people some video rental member card he had... "It's a more immersive experience." Yup the renting hipsters are about.

That's just the full time staff afaik.

Do staff in HMV/xtravision stores count as solely HMV employees, or both?

HMV stores, HMV/Xtra-Vision stores and Xtra-Vision stores are all owned and operated by Hilco.

Whatever about renting, it makes more sense to BUY DVDs.

I get loads for half-nothing from second hand sellers on Amazon. And even the new releases drop in price after a few months.

What do you miss about it? The going in to rent or having to go back to return? Always something!

Yes I know that, thats why I'm asking.

edit - there's something about renting a movie from a shop though. I don't rent mind, I buy blu rays cos I just prefer physical media cos I'm a dinosaur, but physical media, discs, boxes etc for me.

Getting something to play them on could become an issue.
Though I bet you could still buy a VHS recorder somewhere in the world.

I'm not quite sure what your question is then tbh, sorry. They're all employees of Hilco basically and are generally assigned to one store.

Blu rays are superior in almost every way though to streaming. Full resolution with no compression video, the same again with audio, lossless 7.1 DTS or dolby digital. That's enough for me to pop in my favorite blu ray rather than stream it then you get into all the extras that are usually packed into physical media. I love watching my favorite flicks with commentary from the team behind the movies, it is often hilarious and educational.

I do stream a lot too though as it is so accessible. I am watching the man in the high castle on amazon prime right now (Speaking of lower quality in streaming services, prime is probably the worst. Great show though!)

It's sad to see stores closing. And I wish the best to the staff and hope they move on quite quickly.

No, but the one in Tipperary Town is closing. They really tried to expand their range in the last couple of years too, everything from popcorn to posters.

Ah well, back to kodi :p

Xtra Vision was so handy for buying sim cards for the dirty phone :D:D:D

Dirty phone was used to text other women when I was with the ex.

DVDs play on Blu Ray players, computers etc.

There are millions of players around.

As for VHS - it ruled the roost for over 25 years so no problem getting hold of a machine.

This worrying about not being able to play formats is a bit of exaggeration.
