Sorry to hijack your thread OP. I'm just wondering, what if a learner permit holder's car was crashed into & put off the road for a few week's whilst it was repaired, and assume they weren't at fault. Would they not be allowed to rent a car in the meantime?

No, you cannot rent a car on a learner permit.

It's not that there is a law against it. Hertz, or whoever, won't rent a car to you if you don't have a full license. What happened to your original car doesn't matter to them.

Yeah, fair enough. But could a full licenced driver rent one on your behalf, assuming they'd be the one driving it, and bill the at-fault driver's insurance company?

Just seems harsh to me that you could be off the road through someone else being careless.

If your car is sent in for repairs, the garage doing the repairs would usually be the ones who provide the car for you. (Not all will do this, but some will). You can just change your insurance over to this car.

But you're still driving on a learner permit and would need to be accompanied by a full licensed driver.

    No you cannot.

Funnily enough I have rented cars in the UK, Ireland and Spain without even having a learner permit. Obviously I wasn't driving the car and the second driver had to have a full license. Some of them even had policies requiring that the renter had to be a licensed driver but they generally waved that on production of the necessary credit cards (which the other person did not have).

Not too sure what you mean by that...surely that just means that you didn't rent it for yourself?

Any terms and conditions of rental companies that I've experienced in the last 5 years explicitly state that a full driving license is required to rent. Perhaps you signed all the docs and the person at the desk didn't check your lincense, and still handed the keys, but they'd get you in the end if there had been an issue.
