Is a 1.2 petrol engine too small for this size of car? i.e. will you end up with issues further down the line?

My wife is coming from a 03 Golf - 75 BHP so not really overly concerned about speed/performance. More a car to put the kids in and ferry around with sufficient space and go to work 2/3 times a week (100 - 150km a week overall I'd imagine).

I assume it makes sense to look at the above as opposed to a 1.6 deisel version?

I wouldn't have said so. My mother bought a 1.2 cordoba back in 2004 and never found any issues with power or lack there of and did regular drives from donegal to dublin.

I would expect with improvements in modern engines it would be even less of a concern especially for the kind of driving you describe.

I found all of the 105HP Octavias underpowered, even the diesels, depends what you want from the car I guess. It's getting good reviews, must be a great turbo on it! As much torque as the diesel apparently.

    OH has one.
You'll see some difference from the 1.4 petrol golf. She had the same engine in an Octavia before that. They are like chalk & cheese. They are perfectly fine for driving around in even with the 3 kids in the back. Its no Formula 1 yoke but then that's not what it intends to be. I used to hate driving the 1.4 petrol 75bhp coming from 1.9tdi VW but now don't mind driving the 1.2tfsi at all.
What they'll be like long term I don't know. They are out since 11 at least in the Skoda range. VW may have had them longer so even since 11 there must be some feedback on them.
We have had no issue to date had two of them one for 3 years and current 1 for 2 years.

My wife has a 1.2 yeti and I was rather surprised how willing the engine is. Hers has the dsg box. I would go as far to call it 'nippy'. Before anyone asks I drive a 1.4 150hp polo.

    Compared to a 1.4 golf it'll be a racecar.

The current Octavia is lighter than the old one, a 1.2 tsi is only 1155kg, which is only 50kg more than a mk4 golf 1.4

We have one of these fitted in a Yeti with a manual box. I love it. I can guarantee it'll feel a lot livelier than the Golf you currently have. We have had zero issues with ours.

I notice the 2016 petrol options are 86bhp only - I.e no 105bhp option (we aren't buying new) but why is that? The 105bhp is only available in diesel

Maybe people weren't buying the 105bhp version and there was no point offering it.

Oddly enough. The only 1.2 tsi Octavia in the uk is 110bhp

86bhp is the only option on the base Active model, the 86bhp and 110bhp version are available in the next up Ambition models while the higher spec Style only gets the 110bhp version. The nicer 1.4 TSi seems to have been dropped from the range altogether now.

According to Skoda's online price list (which is valid since 1 October), the 1.2 TSI is available with either 85 bhp (86 PS) or 108 bhp (110 PS).

As for whether the more powerful engine would be enough for an Octavia, well I drove a 1.6 TDI 103 bhp DSG a few weekends ago, and while it's certainly not what anyone would call fast, it's fine most of the time.

The 1.2 TSI 108 bhp will therefore be fine for the car, in fact I'd say the 1.2 TSI 108 bhp will be like something powered by rocket fuel compared to a 1.4 74 bhp Golf!

I haven't driven one, but heard good things about them. Drove a Mk2 1.4 (79bhp) a few times and that was terribly slow.

I can't wait to get the new 1.2TSI Yeti in January having visited the Skoda factory last week.
