    Hi guys

I'm just trying to figure out how to get myself portable asap. I currently have no licence in Ireland, I am 26, I'm sitting my Category B theory test next week and will have to wait 1 year and do the lessons etc before I can take my road test. I was thinking about getting a Category A test soon as it seems I would be eligible to drive on the roads on the provisional once I'd passed the 'Initial Basic Training' modules. Does anyone know approx how long this takes? Thanks in advance, I just really want to have an alternative to my bicycle.

Do you have a licence from elsewhere? If so, from where?

It's 6 months before you can take your test but you can get your EDT lessons as soon as you have your permit.

Yes, you can ride a motorcycle unaccompanied . You would have to take the AM theory test, spend about €500 or so on IBT which is 16 hours and could be done over a weekend or broken up if it would suit you better.

However, as a bike rider, let me tell you that it takes a lot of commitment and a lot of cash to start off these days. Unless you have a particular interest or enthusiasm for bikes, it's not the casual affair to get on a bike like it once was. The motorbikes forum is a great source of info and there are a couple of learner threads over there if you have any specific questions :)

I am currently in the process of getting on the road on a motorcycle.
    • Your over 25 so go for the A license. (If you ever want a bigger bike its better to have this license as it covers all size, only thing is with this you'll need to sit the test on a bike over 600cc IIRC)
    • You'll need to sit the theory test for the AM category.
    • Once you do this then head down the NDLS and get the license all sorted out
    • Next step once you get this sorted, is book your IBT
    • This is how far I got, but after IBT you can go out on your own and learn etc..

Depending on IBT cost it could be around 500/550 before you even get yourself a bike/gear, but look. Take it as it comes and as it is needed. Do the IBT, get information and then by gear/bike etc, that's the route I am taking on this.

BTW I have a full class B license. Hope this helps!
