    Hi all
My Dad who is in his late 60's is in the market, but I am trying to figure out what exactly.
He owns a HiAce and a Primera. He used the HiAce for his work but he has now retired. He only covers maybe 4-5000 miles per year, if even that.
He uses the van currently to carry around his push lawnmower, strimmer, hedge cutters to the couple of houses he looks after, he also brings home some bags of turf with it. So he would hope to continue that.

The car is now very low for him to get in and out of.

So he was looking at the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe, but he is finding them expensive to find and probably not the cheapest to run.

I am hoping you lads can give us some suggestions on what might be his options.
What else is there like the Santa Fe, I'm afraid his budget isn't massive.

I said to him maybe a covered trailer or something. But he also is struggling with a "low" car, he loves my missus C-Max as its high and he can get in and out easily, same with the Hi-Ace.

    Any thoughts.

    Mitsubishi Outlander?

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/result/cars/make/mitsubishi/model/outlander/sort/price-asc

Old model is a 2.4 petrol so cheap to buy (based on Carzone pricing), but probably expensive to run.

Newer models are diesel and have used a variety of different engine over the years. Bit plastic on the inside, but probably no worse than a Santa Fe of a similar vintage.

Excellent, never thought of one of them.

Nissan X Trail might be an option, the old model is available in a 2.0 petrol and are really cheap second hand

    Outlander/C-Crosser was also a Peugeot 4007.

But no one in their right mind bought a 4007 or C-Crosser, so you'd do well to find one for sale in Ireland (except there's one of each for sale on Carzone at the moment!)

I'd look at the Honda CRV and Toyota Rav4 too, both are a bit better screwed together than the Outlander or X-Trail.

Thanks, I'd say without even looking theyd both be a good lump more to buy, but you get what you pay for though.
His budget isn't massive and he "wants" to get into the lower tax band so pushing for the 2008.

He will enjoy touring around trying them anyway!!!

I'd look at the total cost of ownership. Rav4 or CRV might cost more initially but may cost less in maintenance/repairs long term.

BTW most of these type vehicles in petrol form will not come with lower tax on the new system. Most of them would not have low co2 emissions so I would not get too hung up on the cheap tax thing. The diesel models may be lower but at this stage may have higher mileage and bigger bills potentially down the road.

    Good point.

    May the hunt begin! :)
