Prepare for a ton of Toyota and VW recommendations. Before that happens I'll chip in with a 1.9 150bhp Vectra. In 09 guise most of the problems have been fixed. Its cheap to run, cheap for parts and cheap to buy. I also thinks they look great, but I do drive one so I would say that :)

With 9k budget your in a good position to pick up a clean car whatever make you choose, some of the regular posters on this forum will have some great advice too so good luck and have fun choosing your next car.

Like the look of Opel's, interior a bit unusual but have heard horror stories about some petrol engines, I like the look of them but the vectra would take my fancy, and while I drive a diesel I'd be a bit concerned about the extra other diesel costs, looks spacious and the boot size looks good.
Wouldn't mind a petrol sometimes but think my mpg is better even at the mileage/distance I do. Is there any other manufacturer influence in the diesel? Might be one to keep an eye on for me in the future if its relatively problem free.

An Audi A4 1.9 tdi 07/08 or passat. 1.9 isn't the fastest but by far the most reliable engine around. If you want more power you could upgrade to the 2.0 tdi with 140hp

You could remap for more power. The 130hps can be remapped to nearly 180hp.
The 1.9 is a reliable engine bar the BXE engine code which i would personally stay away from.
Id also stay away from the 2.0ltrs of that era too due to the oil pump drive issues

Remapping can be risky... Can put a lot of pressure on flywheel, gearbox etc and without upgrading all of those parts as well remapping can lead to big bills...

I will be driving a fair amount. Looks like I may be in the UK as much as here for the next year so buying there probably makes more sense........I think. motorway and city
