Currently involved in a self build. Unfortunately through sheer ignorance, I allowed the dpm above the windows to flap about in the wind which has resulted in them becoming holed and rather permeable to moisture! I've asked several people in the know on what I should do to repair them, the answer has always been black masking tape used to repair round bales!. Does anybody have experience in dealing with this problem? I'm not convinced with the black masking tape solution.

Happened me too a few years ago and yes there is a certain black tape that does the trick. I don't specifically know the tape brand, etc. but it does exist.

Skilled block layers on my build left some of the DPC over the window heads too short to reach the outside block. They were probably trying to save me the hassle of trimming it back later

They 'repaired' it by attaching more DPC using a black bituminous tape. I've seen the same sort of tape used to join radon membrane. A few weeks of cold weather and the tape gave up i.e DPC fell off.

+1 to 893 above re. airtight tape. More expensive but peace of mind as depending on brand it will come with a warranty - which is not grounds for a claim if it fails, but you at least know there is some testing/confidence behind it. Used it myself and worked well.
