Hi All, Came across something a couple of months ago that had me scratching me head, so I thought I'd post it here as there are a good few on boards that are far more technical than me.
So, a few years ago I had fitted a couple of combi boxes to a house in sutton and put one of the small log aerials on the side wall of the house pointing at three rock for Saorview . A couple of months ago the guy rang me he got a new TV and had tuned it and picked up all these different channels and what do I think.
I called around and low and behold he was picking up full freeview from a small log aerial with no amp ,low on the side wall of a house pointing at three rock in the opposite direction to Divis.

So question is , how was this guy getting full freeview , anybody any ideas ?????

    Very interesting!
Weather conditions when you saw it? Is he getting this reception all the time?

    Very interested Sutton resident...........

Yeah, the weather was causing this kind of thing around the end of September/start of October, some of it documented here.

I'd say Sutton guy's 'full Freeview' will only appear under these conditions.

Sutton guys freeview works perfectly bar the odd glitch on one of the frequencies, but that's not the point I'm making, I've fitted plenty of aerials in Howth to pick up full freeview from divis and you need to use a good aerial (triax 100 element or 52 element group A aerial with a 25-30 low noise mast head amp and a clear view of the North past the mourn mountains.

You shouldn't be able to get Divis on a small log aerial with no amp on the side wall of a house pointing the opposite direction with no sight of the North .
So unless anybody has better reason for this, then the only reason I can see is that this guy is getting full freeview from Divis is if somebody is retransmitting it down here, which would be kind of illegal I think!

I've fitted an aerial as described to my brother's house in Howth and he has full Freeview, but he's up beside the summit

Agreed. Can you give a bit of info about the location? Is he on the hill anywhere or down at sea level? Has he a clear line of sight North? e.g. living on the Burrow Rd?

Would think that if this was was possible/being done I'd pick something up on a rescan.

If it's working away all the time, I'd say it's just that his new TV is particularly capable of working off a poor signal, just like people managed in pre-switchover days.

You should pick full freeview on burrow rd but it can vary from house to house on the same rd. I've done a few on burrow rd, you need a good group A aerial and good coax and 27 db vision low noise amp is good. The house I'm talking about is South hill in sutton and there's no way he should be picking up Divis.

I do believe someone is retransmitting Divis near by to him and he is picking it up , Don't no what the law is on rebroadcasting Freeview down south is but am sure it's not meant to be done

No no no, his little log aerial is 10 ft off the ground on the side wall of his house, his own house is blocking him from Divis (plus trees) and is pointing at three rock which is the opposite direction

What about using an aerial to try & find the retransmitter? I suppose you'd have to move around to get a rough fix on him from different directions.

BTW, which is the glitchy frequency?

Couldn't resist doing a little rescan, nearly died when it found 50 channels! But no such luck, for some reason it tuned in empty channels from 801-851, not sure what that is all about. Haven't been following the soarview scene for a while so apologies if in fact that makes perfect sense :)

RTÉ/2RN broadcast loads of empty placeholders for reasons known only to themselves which messes up many TVs and boxes.

I meant to do that Thurston,I'll have to make some time and use the promax and an aerial and just do some mearsements around his area , I was hoping to see if any other guys on boards would have any other suggestions but I guess not . The reason I think it's a retransmission is that when he tuned it, Every channel came in in perfect order which I thought was very strange
