West Jet vs Air Canada

We're flying to Vancouver next July and our best options seem to be between West Jet via Toronto or Air Canada via Heathrow.

Price differential is significant but my partner is put off West Jet because of the 3x3 seat configuration on a Boeing 737, we had an uncomfortable journey home from NYC on something similar a few years ago, West Jet seem to have better seat pitch than others but still.

Air Canada use a 777 on the Heathrow to Vancouver route so a bit more roomy.

So.....anyone flown West Jet and Air Canada and could give opinions? There's €300 in the difference each so I'm leaning West Jet but herself would prefer the wide bodied planes for comfort.

My Son flew to Vancover 2 weeks ago, via Heathrow with air Canada, I can't really give you any opinion as he wouldn't be fussy about planes, he looks more at the cheapest price, he did say when I spoke to him he had a pleasant flight, he also said that as no one had the seat beside him as the flight wasn't full he could stretch out more, the reason he didn't book Toronto through Dublin as he feel it handier via Heathrow, he is gone to vancover on a 2 yr work visa

Jesus, 600 smackers is A LOT to cough up, just to have a more spacious cabin on a flight. You are still going to have the same amount of room per seat, so it won't really affect you, unless you are up moving about the cabin. I can't offer up an opinion on Air Canada vs West Jet in particular, but I have flown across the Atlantic, numerous times, in all manner of air craft.

The wider body aircrafts deffo offer up more wiggle room when you (and everyone else) want to get up to go to the loo, or just stretch your legs. It's definitely much easier in the wider aircraft, as you aren't all having to share the one central aisle with the cabin crew, as they go about their business. Trying to move about is a pain, especially when they are doing their meal and beverage service, with their space hogging cart. But I deffo don't think its a pain that is worth shelling out 600 quid to avoid. I'd rather keep the money in my pocket and spend it on my hollier. But each to his/her own and all that.

I totally agree! I'd much rather the money in our pockets as it would pay for 3 nights in a nice hotel once we're there. I think it was just down to that flight home with Delta (I think) from NYC which was packed with students that put her off the smaller planes.

    I'll keep working on it.

Right you are. If it were me, I'd be far more concerned about avoiding a $hit hole of an airport - like Heathrow - than I would the size of the plane I flew on.

Bear in mind that with Westjet you'll have a stopover in St John's en route to Toronto.

    Did you look at BA?

Heathrow is nowhere near as bad as it was if you plan it right.

Pick a BA flight from Dublin if flying onwards from T5, pick an EI flight of flying onwards from T2 or T3.

If your going with Air Canada make sure its the flight isnt operated by Air Canada Rouge its like flying Ryanair with worse legroom. If its regular Air Canada then its fine. West Jet are good, in flight TV, the crew generally are more friendly than Air Canada. 600 euros is a lot would give you more spending money in Vancover and your going to need that money.

Buy 3 seats for the 2 of you on Westjet for the difference in the AC fare?

Going via London is a hassle, but the overall flight time would be less probably.

Have flown both and would never fly westjet again. They are one of the worst I've flown with, only one worse was air transat. Also, as someone pointed out, that stopover in St Johns would be a killer.

Well, as luck would have it Air Canada just announced a direct service from Dublin to Vancouver - it is Air Canada Rouge but the direct flights seal the deal. Only €724 each and it's a wide body plane so all good.
