Getting Free to Air and Saorview on my TV in kitchen

    Hi Guys,

I just need some advice. I have bought a small saorview enabled tv for my kitchen. I have a sky package for the living room and bedroom but think I can connect up my kitchen tv as follows:

    1. Using an outside aerial (seen one in powercity for 39.95) connect this to the tv to access all Irish channels.
    2. I have an old sky box still with card and I think I can also connect this to my existing satellite dish via cable to get the UK Free to Air channels.

Am I correct? If so can anyone advise which cables I need to achieve this for both Saorview and Free to Air.

I am not interested in the Sky Eye as we are usually watching different things anyway, so no point.

If you already have two Sky Plus boxes it is very unlikely that you will be able to add another box to the dish. Have a look at the LNB at the end of the arm of the dish and see if there are any free connectors.

For the aerial, make sure you are getting the right one for your location. If you can get one you can mount in the attic it might be a lot easier than mounting it on the chimney.

For the cable, get a 100m reel of satellite quality cable from a decent electrical wholesalers, have a look around the threads here and you will find the right spec cable. It will cost you the same as buying a shorter length from a tv shop. Get plenty of F connectors as they will be used to connect to the LNB, Sky box and aerial.

My main advise is don't buy an indoor aerial for Soarview...I have tried numerous and they never work not matter what they say! I recently paid €80 to have an outdoor aerial replaced and a new one installed on my roof and I have great uninterrupted reception. The same cable type will works for both Saorview and FTA, well it does for me anyway and as advised go to a wholesaler and it will prove less costly. As mentioned below your dish might only have 2 LNBs but you can buy quad ones and replace them on the dish, an example of this can be seen here (http://www.freetv.ie/quad-lnb.html) and also I find this website very helpful with video tutorials on how to do things.

There are many guys out there would would probably provide and put up an aerial and set this all up for you for a once off payment of <€150 as you already have the box and save you the hassle of doing it yourself.

Thanks guys you have been really helpful. I'll get himself to check the dish this weekend and plough on with the plan.

That's all down to your location. I've happily used an indoor aerial in two different locations but had no success in two others.

A sky eye might be an option if no lnb connection available, even if there are limitations.

Octo LNBs are available, with 8 connections, as the name suggests.
