Hissing Noise from Cold Tank Refilling Randomly

Hey there. Sorry if this is a simple question but in the last few days I've noticed the cold water tank (above our hot water boiler) making a hissing water filling noise randomly. It normally makes no noise during the day apart from when you use the hot taps when the hot tank takes in water from the cold tank above it, necessitating the cold tank to refill (at least that's my understanding).

Is this normal, I've never noticed it before but it's a bit annoying and I'd like to know if there is something I can do to fix it. It is happening throughout the day at random points for random amounts of time when nobody is using the water. Normally like I said it's all quiet unless someone is using the water.

usually its a small leak in something the tank feeds. Toilet cisterns are the usual culprit. drippy tap?

Thanks for the reply, that sounds like it would make a lot of sense.

Edit: I checked all the taps and none are leaking and the cistern tanks aren't dripping or refilling themselves. It's more of a raspy refilling noise the tank is making.

Have you got up to confirm that its the water entering your main tank? Are there other tanks up there - eg small one for central heating??

If its defo your main tank making the noise and there's water going into it - there are only 2 things it can be.

    1. the ball-cock on your tank might be wearing a bit and the extra water coming in is going out your overflow.
You might not be able to tell in this weather but is there anything coming out the overflow pipe (should be a pipe going from near the top of your tank out of the attic often through the soffit)
Other thing to do is look in the tank when you hear the noise... is the level up near where the overflow goes out.
Fixing it might only be a matter of adjusting the screw that changes the angle of the arm.

    2. If its not going out the overflow, you have a small leak somewhere within the system the tank feeds.

Hey Jimmy thanks again for replying. For some reason the landlord walled off the water tank so I only see the lower third of it, the top two thirds are behind a wood panels I can't check the ball-cock or anything like that. I will get onto my landlord (who is an absolute disaster for getting back to me) and see if they can do anything for me.

    Thanks man for your help.
