My father in law just bought a 09 1.4 octavia. The engine is marked as 1.4 as is the cert and a call to the dealer who sold it new said the same. We noticed tho that the car has been taxed as a 1.6 since new. Hes got over 3 months tax left on it so theres no rush to get it sorted.
Just wondering how this could happen and how does he go about sorting it. Does he just call to the local tax office with the cert and get it changed on their system or is it a lot of hassle doing it?
Also, not our problem but just curious if the previous owner would be entitled to a refund on the tax over paid? All the discs are in the car from new and its always been done at the 1.6 rate.
    Cheers.

If it's an 09, it's taxed on Co2 rates not engine size.

Being 09 it would be CO2 based, what CO2 rate is on the logbook?

    Cheers
If i look up done deal all the 1.4 octavias from 08 on are €385. All the 1.6 cars are (i think) €514 which is what all the discs in his were charged at from the first time it was taxed.
Maybe his is a different engine but i cant see another 1.4 petrol charged at the higher rate.

It should match up here with the rate he is paying. Is the car an automatic, that would increase the rate too.

No. It a manual. Could just be a different engine and co2 rates but we thought it strange that theres no other car for sale with his tax rate. If its correct then fine.

The 08s taxed at €385 are pre July.
1.4 Octavia isn't especially low emissions and rate is correct.
Can be confirmed by putting reg into motortax.ie

    Here's another 09 1.4 Octavia with €570 tax

The log book and everything checks out. It seems all is in order anyway.
Most cars on donedeal are saying the lower tax price but all on carsireland are showing the higher for some reason. I only looked at donedeal so thats where the confusion came from.
He got the car for a song with a few tiny cosmetic repairs needed so all well that ends well anyway.
    Cheers lads.

Does the registration and VIN match? I would fear shenanigans.

Yep. Everything matches. Hes fairly thorough with everything and is an ex mechanic himself so checked the car out and was happy with everything bar the tax. Hes friendly with the indie who did the servicing and repairs to the car from new and got contact details from him so i wouldnt be worried that way.
I rang a skoda dealer asking what the differance was and they said that it would be a car that came in before the co2 tax rate in 08 but was bought/registered in 09. Does that make sense? It doesnt to me but i dont know much about these things.

It sounds like a car that was a victim of the change in the tax system from engine size to co2 rating. As the car had above average co2 rating it was not a popular choice with people because of the higher tax rate so probably sat unsold in a dealership since 2008. The dealer either registered it as a pre reg/demo in 2009 and then sold it to it's first owner at a substantial discounted price to shift it.

Simi stats show 297 1.4 octavias registered in 2009 that fall into band d (like your one)
And 9 that fall into band c (these would be 1.4 Turbo models)
So they were still for sale in 09.

There were only 10 sold in 2010 in band d
    And 7 in band c.

Anyone you've contacted in the dealers about this has been playing dumb or plain dumb.
The dogs in the street know that co2 tax came in in 2008.
