PhD by research or Ed Psych?

Hi all, I am trying to decide between doing a research PhD on wellbeing or a doctorate in educational psychology. I already have an established career in education but would like to study psychology again. I think I would get more personal fulfillment from the research PhD but if I wanted to become a full time academic afterwards I'm aware this is an extremely competitive and difficult area to break into. On the other hand I'm drawn to gaining a professional qualification like the ed psych which would allow me to work as a psychologist after. What do people think about these two options?
