Isn't it strange that neither RTE Radio 1 or Newstalk pulled regularly scheduled programs on Friday Night to cover the happenings in Paris ?

Doesn't that make it even odder, it.was massive but regular programming continued.

I'm surprised Rté didn't on some platform, for newstalk I think they genuinely didn't have anyone to anchor coverage at thay time on a Friday.

Live updates on terrorist attacks don't really suit radio.

    Sorry I misread the OP.

Anyway, regardless not sure what they could have done as they would not have had anyone on the ground there.

the fact that it happened late in the evening its not odd. i doubt listnership late friday night is very small compared to tv and the fact that the likes of sky news had live coverage would have put them off. did rte break off the late late to go live to paris? both radio stations gave it coverage though from early saturday morning when they would have had larger listnership.

I dont the full extent of what was happening was fully known. Midway during the Late Late Tubridy interrupted the usual misery to bring us news of the external misery that was "40 people reported dead in Paris". There was initial reports of a hostage situation in the music theatre, so nobody knew the full extent of the carnage in there.

It happened when there an incident in Boston the same time on a Monday evening. Much much further away than Paris.
Not clear why RTÉ think Boston(6 deaths) is more important than Paris(136) or Ankara(102) or Garissa(147) or Baga (150) or Sana'a(137) or Peshawar(145).

Radio 1s music programmes were changed on Saturday morning to reflect the mood - unlike commercial stations. There was a special morning Ireland at 8am.

What audience would it serve to have a special radio programme on a foreign story late on a Friday night? Had a similar incident been happening in Ireland somewhere, of course you would expect radio stations to bring listeners the latest details. A foreign story where people can get the details off twitter, Sky News, BBC etc..there's no need. They might as well conserve their resources for well made programmes the following day.

Not many but this was a major incident and there are plenty of people still without access to other media. No obligation on anyone to run with it but newstalk Did run with with the Boston bomber story two years ago, although I think they where able to get staff in because it was Rolling into the morning of a Monday.

Its likely there wouldve been more staff on site on a monday night. I cant imagine their being a huge presence at that hour on a weekend, let alone a listenership to warrant it. Last thing id think of is to turn on the radio when i can see and hear more on sky news and twitter. I wasnt gonna turn off the tv and run out and put on the radio.

Nobody was sure what was happening and to be honest would make boring radio. With TV you have the dramatic visuals to keep viewers glued to their sets. Because of the visuals you can get away with hours of repeating the same information and winging your way through it. Not the same on radio.

Besides, I reckon many people who heard about it on the hourly radio news bulletin would then switch over to Sky or BBC news anyway.

Had lbc on. I hate it when some news breaks and im driving whit no accses to uk radio a bit of crackly long wave maybe. There is nothing to turn on here outside the peak for live programming.

BBC5 Live had it breaking from Friday night, and kept it pretty much going all Saturday too.

It was fantastic reporting - live updates / interviews / analysis.
As they couldn't rely on showing loops of tv footage, they put more effort into the content.

I guess they have the resources available to pull it all together.

You're lucky that you weren't relying on RTE News Now to keep you posted .. they were still running repeats of the Nine O'Clock News until past 11pm when they started to show live pictures from Paris without any voiceover .. just banner headlines. Sky News was best for up to date happenings, much better than the BBC News channel on the night.
