Protective Gear for members of AGS

Can I just ask:

I've just seen this which is the shield of a member of the BRI - a French police force special unit - after the assault on Bataclan.



Now, considering the fact that the stab-vests given to members of An Garda Síochána are essentially all that's preventing a serious injury from a distant-attack by a weapon on members,

when Dear God, can someone tell me are members going to receive adequate safety equipment/uniform?

Have there or is there on-going talks with Commissioner O Sullivan about this basic 101 safety measure / adequate protective gear for members?

Apologies if this is not permitted. Just something I wanted to ask/would like to know.

Not all members get that! Think about your average rank-&-file members and what they walk into, into the unknown. The stab-vest is not even adequate for it's name.

The everyday units don't need equipment like that. Specialist units have specialist equipment. They are not going to publicise what they have.

And why is the stab vest not adequate? They saved plenty of members from serious injury.

I get what you're saying OP but thats specialist equipment... available for specialist units.
I'd certainly welcome new uniform & equipment, but at the same time if i was to carry a shield and all that gear around looking like Ned Kelly i'd never get anything done! There has to be a balance.

Finally, BRI is a special unit belonging to Paris's own police department, intervening only within and around the capital. An unofficial site on RAID and other special police forces reports that BRI counts 48 full members, and can field up to 72 if necessary.

I presume the stab vests are required wear or is it up to the individual officer or command?
Are the only the external ones we see or do they issue the "under shirt" style? Honestly the vests look daft with the dress shirt and tie, it's time the Gardaí started wearing a more functional 21st century uniform, but that's another posting in of itself.

Our lot are issued a standard level III vest with a soft trauma plate for the front. It's worn under the uniform shirt. Most agencies don't require you to wear it, however 99% of us do, but there are a few old sweats who have the "when its your time, its your time" attitude. They have saved many a life/serious injury in car crashes incidentally.

Of course the SWAT crew have expanded levels of protection and wear military grade vests, helmets, etc.
