Using stove without grate.

I have a multifuel stove. The grate has gone on it and I'll will need to order one. In the meantime, does anyone know if it's OK to burn wood and/or turf without the grate? I'd be reluctant to burn coal but I am not sure if the stove will be OK with just wood/turf. It's a Heat Design insert, if that makes any difference.

I have a stove that can be used either as a wood-burner with no grate or a multi-fuel with a grate.

When set up as a wood-burner, the grate is removed and an approx 2 inch bar is fitted in the front to retain the ashes and keep fuel away from glass. The general idea is to let about a half to an inch of ash to build up in order to insulate the fire from the bottom of stove. It burns wood ok and the fire is low down in the stove. When burning wood, some ashes need to be removed every week or so. It will also burn peat briquettes although there are more ashes. Its important not to poke. The general idea is to let the fuel stand out and the air in from the top.

Generally speaking, a grate is needed for coal and probably for turf.

So to answer your question, I think your stove will probably burn wood or briquettes ok without a grate but for safety reasons, you really need some type of retainer on the floor of the stove inside the door to hold in the ashes and fuel.
