We're having an international food day in the office. As a Paddy, what should I bring?

All we have in the office is a microwave so at best all I can do is heat something up.

    A Tayto crisp sandwich

Keep it simple. Good wholemeal bread with salted Irish butter. Quality smoked salmon, possibly some cured meats from Gubbeen Smokehouse. A selection of Irish cheese - perhaps some St Tola, Desmond, Durrus and Knockdrinna.

Personally, I'd say piss off with the fake bonhomie and "fun" dreamed up by some HR knobjockey and let me get back to work. Afterwards, I'll go home and enjoy food with people I like.

A man/woman after my own heart. Unfortunately it is seriously frowned upon around these parts if you don't demonstrate a vast amount of enthusiasm and enjoyment during mandatory fun sessions organised by the company.

Order a few 3 in 1's the night before so they are ready for the microwave for the breakfast.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,969 ✭✭✭hardCopy

Tayto crisps, manhattan popcorn and TK red lemonade.

    No microwave required.

    A nice stew.

    Simple, says he.

It involves buying high quality ingredients, taking them out of the fridge in time so they aren't ice cold, slicing and buttering the bread, serving.

    Couldn't be simpler.

    3 in 1.

Edit: Don't put the container in the microwave.

Where are you and how available are ingredients?

A stew is easy to make. Black pudding or "blood" pudding to some would provide some nice culture shock -- even if there's no blood in it now, you can bluff them.

Lamb's Liver is nice and cooks in less than 10mins. Dust it in some flour, a bit of oil and some Irish mustard (maybe some herbs? parsely?), let it sit for 20 mins or more and fry it (maybe in real butter -- not spreadable). Avoid chicken liver like the plaque.

I'm in Dublin so ingredients shouldn't be a problem. However, work starts at 9am and the international food day doesn't start until 2pm so lamb's liver reheated in a microwave might not be too appealing.

I think I might have to go with a suggestion from a previous poster and go with the cheese and smoked salmon option. Might even throw in a few prawns for good measure.

Thanks for your input though. :)

Do you work in Ireland? If not, you could have a lot of fun with this. Like a suckling pig filled with skittles, laid on a bed of rice paper!

Bacon, cabbage and potatoes...if you are adventurous a turnip instead of cabbage.
