Listening to RTE news reports for the last while. Every time IS, ISIS, ISIL are mentioned, the newsreader precedes it with "so called". Are they afraid of being sued or what?

The should just get the Gor-dee to arrest them all.

I think they are just not giving them credit for actually being a State like the name would suggest.

RTE are not the only ones - the body known by various names is not a State therefore "so called" is a correct prefix.

Every news agency refers to them as the self styled or so called Islamic State. It's not just an RTE thing.

Thanks for clearing that up. I never thought of it that way.

It's a bit silly when you think about it, they don't apply the same standard to the "so-called Irish Republican Army", despite them not being the legitimate army of our republic. Just seems contrived to me.

I would ask the opposite, are RTE afraid of offending them? Because if RTE really didn't want to grant them any kind of legitimacy. Then they should call them by what Muslims and the Arabic speaking world calls them - Daesh. Daesh which means = evil wrongdoers, blaspemers & the ones who sow discord. I'd much prefer if RTE stopped their tip toeing nonsense with their use of so called and actually called them what they really are - Daesh.

    M. Hollande referred to them as "Daesh" on Saturday.

I'd say not the word he wanted to use!

I'd agree "State" implies some kind of legitimacy. Someone find out what Farsi for "murdering cowards" is and suggest that.

It's an illegitimate unrecognised state, easier saying 'so called' that having to say that every time.

Daesh is the Arabic equivalent acronym of ISIS/ISIL.

Is this any way connected to Waterford and its GAA teams?

Don't think so. Daesh claim to have had some successes.

I would rather a news source which tried to stay factual rather than being like fox news or daily mail. We don't need rte letting us know who the bad guys are, I'm sure most people watching are capable of figuring it out themselves, everyone else has daily mail, fox and the brickbart one.

Yes, and apparently is also sounds very like the Arabic word "dahes", which translates as "one who sows discord".

Some people calls them IS, some ISIL, some Daesh.
I just think of them a bunch of murdering twats.
