Burned skin on a run from something in a puddle.

So I went for a long run today. One of my feet started to get very sore. I had to stop to take off my sock. I noticed that a white foam was coming out of one of my shoes with every step.

When I got home I had a bad burn across my toes. The runner are nearly dead and went in the bin.

Clearly it was something in a puddle. The run was through Cork city so I am wondering what it might have been.

All I know that when it got into my shoe it foamed up when mixed with water like washing up liquid so that white foam was coming out of my shoes with every step.

Anyone have any ideas. I know its a strange one.

You're kinda asking for medical advice. I suggest going to see a Doctor or asking in a Pharmacy.

I would see a foot specialist, that white stuff could be foot rot.

The OP asked for advice in diagnosing the cause of a condition which could only be done by understanding exactly what the condition is.

The responder indicated that the place to go for such advice is to a medical professional.

This is both prudent and in line with Boards rules as giving medical advice here is against the rules.

Did you run past any industrial areas? Potentially get onto the Gardai about a chemical leak, it's probably not them who need to investigate but if there are chemicals being drained onto the street then they will know who to contact about it.

    November rain innit?

Sorry rom! Hope your foot is ok, that sounds fairly scary :(

The op is not seeking medical advice. He's asking board members have they any ideas what sort of pollutions could have caused it. I'm sure the op is smart enough to go for medical advice if he received any burns/injuries. Op already knows that some chemical caused the issue. The doctor would have no way of knowing what caused it unless samples of whatever caused it were taken and analyzed. Doctor could treat the injury but not answer the op's question. Imho

I had something similar before but it was washing detergent from badly rinsed socks or running down from badly rinsed shorts.
Had white foam coming out from my runners and a red rash across my toes afterwards.
It happened during a long run in really bad rain.

Could have been just some residual washing powder left on your socks that came out with the rain? Has happened to me with jackets and capris that there was too much detergent in the wash.

edit: ha started typing that before going into a meeting and same thing as aoboa

I was thinking the same thing as you guys, washing powder or liquid. In my machine you'll often get a sock trying to make a run for it and gets stuck against the door so never really gets rinsed or washed correctly. I usually throw it in for the next wash or hand rinse it.

That wouldn't account for damage to the runner though - if it needs to be binned it sounds like it was burnt too ??

My first thought was that it was washing powder also.

It looked like washing powder but its after burning the skin off my toes. Going to the doc in a bit but have no idea what it was or where I stood in it. Also its not happened with anything else so its defo something I stood in. No damage to the runner just my skin. binned runners as dont want same again to happen clearly.

Yeah but I only felt it like 7 miles in to the run so no idea where it could have been.

If you are confident that it is from some puddle and not your washing machine then that is for someone else to figure out exactly where it came from. Would need you to get whatever it is analysed though, including your foot and the shoe, so you run the risk of great embarrassment if it is just your washing powder.

If it is some kind of chemical burn picked up due to running through a puddle near somewhere that people are dumping things they shouldn't where they shouldn't then you must report it.

If it is just that you are allergic to the washing powder then that is also useful to know, but less of an environmental risk to the people of Cork. :D

Yeah, might be worth keeping the runner incase doc suggests getting it tested?

Maybe pick up one of those litmus or PH strips and swab the runners?

Could be washing powder in the socks which didn't rinse out properly. Sock dried, back in the press. Powder abrades the skin and when you stepped in the puddle you likely reactivated the detergents which burnt the feet off you.

Bet the shoes smelt nice though at the end ;)

Nasty dose though all the same.

We use those gel things from aldi rather than powder but that could be it. But it happen to one sock would be strange.

Does sound the most logical thing.

Did he do any tests for acid or anything?

Battery acid maybe , sounds nasty unless someone put something in your runners, have you made any enemies ?

No, just gave me a cortisone cream.

My experience with the detergent suds left me with red raw toes for a few days afterwards. No idea why though.

Thought it was hilarious at the time though. One of those 'I must be f'ing mental' moments when you look down and see suds coming out your shoes after running for hours in torrential rain :)

Yeah, only ever happened to me in really heavy rain..was driving me made though as my knees were foaming and I kept wiping it away and it kept coming back. I was just thinking how much bloody detergent could there be?!

I think you should all use the extra rinse function in your washing machines! :D

Strange that it only came out of one runner... Even stranger that it burned!!!
Washing powder usually doesn't do that.....
Will be interested to hear what he/she has to say. It sound like a caustic burn but from what????

I know. Like washing powder would irrate the skin. This burn the skin like you put a hot iron on my toes and drew blood. Suppose you can trust its only water in puddles.
