  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,684 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

These boxes are the bomb and great value but you need a specialised hd satellite dish that has been programmed for these boxes for them, they usually cost €5000 but I can upgrade an existing dish (including sky and communal apartment dishes) over the internet for just €2000 if you like!

    ?

    that's a joke surely

No, it only receives the paid for subscription services, the description of the product on the supplied link lies!

What had you drank when you wrote that very informative post?:D

Anyone know how simple it is to view channels between satellite and terrestrial input?
Is there one combined EPG, list of favourites etc, or do you have to switch between sources?

Ok, picked up one of these yesterday, simple review
    - It looks like the same box as Triax 112 (saorview approved)
    - It combines terrestrial & satellite in one EPG (terrestrial 7-day EPG, satellite now and next)
    - It's easy enough to search terrestrial and satellite, remember to select all satelites (19.2, 28.2, 28.6 & 4)
    - 1 tip, when the box turns on it will ask you for your country, select "England".This will allow you to pick up C4HD, Channel5's, Spike, E4, and others which you don't get when you select Ireland
    - When you search for terrestrial channels, you can select Ireland there
    - Biggest pain is moving the channels around to a usable order, absolute pain, you have to manually delete all the multiples of a channel picked up via satellite, and then move around until you have the order the way you want it (I like the terrestrial1-9, then BBC 1-4 HD, then ITV's then C4 and variants. Only thing is you can back it up to USB when it's done. Set aside 3-4 hours for satellite scan
    - Timeshift (Pause) function works ok

Overall it seems to be a good box, neat, small, wanted something in the kitchen I can record the odd match, program on Saorview. Have 128GB stick, haven't tried recording yet. Replaced old SKY HD box + aerial into back of TV (I have humax 500GB in sitting room which is a brilliant machine) Will play around a bit more and see if there is anything else

If you get a chance could you check if you can record a program daily on Saorview like series link on sky.

Think someone said its a timer function.

Thanks Jonhgonne for these great tips. I ordered the box yesterday. After long search (i dont like to waste a single penny for a thing i dont need) i decided it is good enough for my needs. Vendor support website is the best Ive ever seen, so didnt get any usufull info there, not even a manual!

TBH it appears very similar to the Ferguson Ariva boxes. With those you get a 7-day epg with Saorview and Now & Next on satellite. If recordin Saorview you get the option to Record Once, Daily, Weekly & Off. You choose whatever option you want.

I wouldn't touch this 4life box with a barge pole, I made the mistake of buying one of their sat/smart tv combo boxes last year from Currys.

I set the box up no problem, figured out how to connect to the internet and had everything working fine youtube, and various news channels from around the world, there was also an IPTV section all worked great.

Problems started after a few months all the iptv channels stopped working, then the news and finally youtube gave up the ghost.

I tried emailing 4life as there was nothing on their website about software updates, I am still awaiting a response after several emails spread over the last few months.

I tried updating the software via sat link ( as you are supposed to be able to do) and it keeps timing out. It was cheap and cheerful while it lasted but the level of service from 4life is non existent.

Keep your money in your pocket and buy from a brand you can trust.

Forget all that other jazz. These are perfect for FTA and saorview as a 'one box' solution. And at that price, pretty much the best deal in town. Well worth it.

Sorry guys might sound a bit stupid here, but do you connect this box up to your existing satellite dish? I have sky in the sitting room and bedroom but have a small tv in the kitchen currently with an little minux 5 android box but it's crap really and not reliable in the evenings with wifi coming and going.

I have an old sky box which I could connect but wouldn't get the Irish Channels but this box could give me the uk and irish channels with just a cable connecting to my satellite dish I think? Am I correct? Do I need an outdoor aerial also? I'm in a valley so cannot get terrestrial channels by indoor aerial.

It connects to your Sky dish to give you the free UK channels, but you will also need to connect an aerial to receive the Irish ones. This box cannot receive Irish channels via the Sky dish.

No, give it 3-4 hours for satellite scan, and reordering or deleting the doubles & crap you don't want. Depends what you want to keep. Once you have the order you want, you can save as USB.

    Ok, little more update.
    - recorded from Saorview rte 2hd last night, it is timer record. With 7 day epg, you select what you want to record, and you confirm the time, frequency( daily, weekly, monthly), ans choose between view and record, it's not perfect as you can cut the program, but generally that shouldn't be an issue
    - recorded from sat this morning, it's only now and next, but a little trick- if you know the time of the program you want to record, you can manually set up time and frequency, so I think if you had your TV listings, you could set up a manual series link. It'll be based on time and date, but could work I think, going to test it on Peep Show on c4 for the next number of weeks
    - records fine on 128gb stick, plays fine, no stuttering, hd is fine. Easy enough interface to playback, rename, reorder and delete.

Overall I think it's pretty decent for 49e, it's not as user friendly as a Freesat box, certainly similar to Walker Saorview-only PVR with the added benefit that it will also do FTA recording. Only way to find out if it suits you!

As long as you are happy with just now/next EPG on the UK channels.

If you want to use this to record you'll also need a drive. And at that stage you might want to consider a second hand Freesat box.

Yeah it uses a normal TV aerial just like a TV.

Saorsat is another option, but a whole other topic, and really only for cases where you can't get TV signal even with a good size external aerial.

Got the box myself this afternoon. Does anyone has it connected to diceqc switch? I didnt have much time to play around but cant find any sattelite, plus my aerial was not connected at all but that should not affect the box. I dont know how to set 22hz and tone option, never had such problems with old box. My ultimate question is there chance of diceqc and 4ife being incompatible after all?

For some reason when I chose Ireland at the start I could not get a satellite reception for Astra 2A. I then did a factory reset on the box, chose England and did the saorview scan again. When that was complete I just went into Satellite Channel Search, selected the Astra2A sattelite and scanned, it had a high quality signal when I did it that way and zero quality when i chose Ireland originally, no idea why but all okay now and sorted the channels into Favs there.

Got one in Clonmel on Saturday, after the offer was gone from the site. Phone your local store and ask if they have any.

MAybe you are getting the wrong multiplex?
Check this map, and see where you should be and check the transmitter near you.
From my understanding you should be receiving channels 22 and 25 in Waterford city, but different channels work for nearby areas served from other transmitters in the locality.
So try doing a manual search for those channels, 22 and 25?

Im still hoping I can pick up a cheap combo box somewhere...

You can get a Revez from satworld for less than 60 yoyos. They're grand for a cheapo combo.

Have a look at the Daily Deals on Amazon. Try all the varients, .co.uk, .de, .es .fr. I find the better options are on Amazon.de.

Would it be possible for somebody who has this all set up to upload the database file. Don't fancy spending an afternoon deleting all the foreign channels :p
