I have a wd my cloud 2tb server below the tv where it will be set up

Just from reading a few reviews it's unclear should I get the 32gb or 8gb version as my current sever might be handy for storage or am I better just getting the 32gb anyway

    Any advice is welcome

I'd get a 32GB Wii U. Whatever hard drive you connect will be formatted by the console and will have to be used exclusively for saves and downloads. You can't partition sections of the drive. I don't know if you're aware of that. If you buy retail games and don't download much, you may never need a hard drive. The 32GB's is really about 26-27GB's after updates have been downloaded.

In reality the 32GB model can get filled up very fast, so the best solution might be to go with the 16GB model and put the difference toward an external 1 or 2TB hdd (because as said above, you can't partition your existing storage for Wii U usage)

Doesn't matter which WiiU you get, as an external drive will be the default installation site and you won't notice any difference, or if there is a difference I haven't seen it.
So, either WiiU and a 500gb external HDD that's powered via a separate power supply, so it is more reliable and doesn't hog the USB ports.

Would you need the USB ports for anything else? I was just going to use an old hard drive, from my ps3 in a case with one of those y type cables to power it, with the 2 wiiu USB ports. So maybe I should think again?

Sorry, I was the same until i got a Gamecube controller adapter, then I needed the two USB ports!
Also, I have one taken up with a USB Ethernet adapter too!
Run out of ports very fast, only have the one left!

Oh I just got the GameCube adaptor for Smash Bros too, finally, looking forward to trying out the game with the gc controller. Is it better to use an external harddrive with a power source or a portable drive that the wii u powers? Haven't needed one yet but I'm thinking of swapping my premium for the basic model and would need one then for downloads (FYI, the reason I want the basic one now is purely aesthetics - so that it matches my other white-edition consoles under the telly :pac:).

I've a 2TB Seagate hard drive hooked up to my 32GB Wii U using a Y cable and have never had a problem. I much rather that than another plug in the wall.
