On Disability, can I get help with a vet bill?

I am unable to have children so my babies are my two cats. The lil male is only 7 months old, I had everything saved to get him neutered and all his jabs. However He has started to get quite ill, I took him to the vets twice which was a hit but I could do it. However there is a test he needs which is €120 and I don't think I can afford it. Is there any type of help I can get as I am on disability allowance?

Seriously thank you to anyone who can help me!!!!

I'm not sure about the availability of benefits, but Blue Cross may be able to help

I'm sorry but you won't get any help for your vet bill from the state

Your community welfare officer might make a discretionary payment since you are reliant on your pets for emotional support.

Look into pet insurance for future incidences.

Most vets will offer a payment plan for people who can't pay in one go . Maybe contact vet and see if that's a option

    ^^^^

I agree with this. Vets will help you out where they know you are taking care of the animal and are genuine.

Our cat is quite aggressive and has to be sedated for her check up. It costs.
In harder times the vet always allowed us to just pay it off weekly. Also had a dog that a few kids tried to hang. Damaged his neck bad. He had to go to UCD for three weeks. Again, permitted to pay off weekly.

Are you sure? You need to read and re read insurance policies to see what is covered, very often people don't bother and get caught out.

The dog is 8 years old, shes had insurance from day one and all she has spent on medical costs is 15 euros a month for the last 8 years. That much Im sure of, I just asked her.

There will still be an excess on the policy which is normally about €90. So for example if a vet bill is €300 you pay €90 and the insurance pays €210 and some vets will not claim direct so you still need to pay and then claim it back. The insurance will also not pay for pre existing conditions or anything relating to them. I think insurance is a good idea but it's not ideal for everyome.

The best bet for now is to ring around the vets and see if you can arrange a payment plan. A lot of vets also take part in a scheme that offers a reduced rate for neutering for people on certain benefits. Its worth a phone call.

You have a Christmas bonus coming up in a few weeks, maybe you could borrow against that?
