    Hi all,
just wondering how long do you have to keep a calve after they are born under the beef genomic scheme. I have a few three month old calves with cull cows and was looking to get rid of the cows in the next few weeks, and the calves if I could as I don't have the room to keep them over for the winter.

Thanks kovu. It's a bit of a pain as I am over stocked and dont have enough room to carry every thing for the winter.

NP. Don't think there's anyway around it unless you can offload a few drystock or older weanlings into a feedlot or to a B & B for a bit.

what's the penalty if you sell a calf & have been accepted into the scheme?

loss of payment for first year?

Well I have one less worry this morning. One of the cows that I was looking to cull, dead out in the field this morning, left with a 2nd a half month old calve now. See how she will fair out on meal and hay/silage for the winter.

Will you get a PM done? I'd be thinking tetanus with this weather, have you a lick with them?

No won't be getting a pm done, the knackery has my donation. I would be thinking the same about tetanus. I have no lick with that bunch of cows as I was feeding them meal and barley. Expensive lesson learnt.........

Sorry to hear that-we nearly lost one during the week as well. Only barely got her to the factory on time she had blood on her lungs so we were lucky.we are trying to persuade another cow to take on her calf it's only 4weeks old.

Yea it's not nice at all to lose one like that. Calf should be ok at that age, I remember a few times we lost a cow we'd feed the calf crunchl in a bucket with some oil. Not sure the reason, guess it was for extra nutrition or something.

Ah she'll get cute a pinch abit off cow's here and there while there calves are sucking. This lad lost his mother at 3 months and managed fine. He was sucking at least 8 cow's. He would sneak in from behind while there own calves were sucking.
I hope I've attached the pic properly.
