Madrid restricts parking & speeds to reduce pollution

Never been there but never would have thought they'd have this problem. Will be interesting to see if it works. Sad to see measures like this are needed but no denying the problem is there if you can actually see it.

Street parking for non-residents has been banned in central Madrid and speed limits reduced on access highways in a bid to reduce pollution levels that have left the city covered with a murky brown cap that can be seen from miles away.
The town hall said on Friday that it was applying the restrictions after three days of excess levels of nitrogen dioxide.
It called on people to use public transport and said extra bus services were being provided.
The measures were decided late on Thursday and many drivers were caught by surprise when they arrived in the city to find parking meters turned off.
For the second day in a row, the city imposed a speed limit of 40mph (70kph) on access highways, down from the normal limits of 50-56mph (80-90 kph).

Fantastic idea. Tackle soaring levels of nitrogen oxides and dirty brown sludge by herding folk onto even more overheating diesels. :pac:

Petrol cars gives out fumes as well, maybe electric hire only for city driving?

Refit all buses with 500-inch Cadillac V8s. Compression ratio of 8.5:1, lazier state of tune than a fifteen-year-old labrador, lowest NOx emissions evah. Plus, two-speed-with-overdrive Hydra Matic for delight and convenience. :D

Looks like they had at least planned to move away from diesel 5 years ago

“The Transport Municipal Company (EMT) will not buy diesel vehicles and the taxis renovation will not be done with diesel vehicles anymore” declared Gallardón.
This decision was taken because diesel models emit too much NO2. Madrid is the first European city that acts against Diesel technology for environmental reasons. The municipality will not force to buy any special technology, but will establish a control not only in terms of CO2 but also regarding the NO2 emissions.

2010. 2 years after our "greens" toed the line and subsidised the German/French economies.
