Thanks a million for posting that. I want to plant/restore and old orchard and with the old varietes. Not doing it as part of Glas just want to do it for myself/ With Glas seen alot of old type trees sold out and shortage of stock means removed from second round. Wonder if in my case better till wait to next year as better selction of stock. Any experience of the Old English Nursery seem to have decent stuff.

IMO the seedsavers stock will all be of a high standard. They have not dispatched yet, so it is not like stock in a nursery that has already been picked over. I just posted as I understand that the numbers they have are already sellin out on preorder. Most var are still there. They offer a tasting session so you can taste the apples, try before you buy, would make for a good day out in Clare :D. I couldnt resist these apple trees when planting up my garden 15 years ago and have 5 apple trees from them. no disease on them so far but the birds beat me to the apples most of the time.

I cant find the list I made but I know I went for the "Loughborough tree of Wexford", Ard Cairn Russet and Irish Peach + 2 others. they have unique tastes, my wife especially loves the loughborough tree, a very sweet cooker taste.

It really is down to what you like and if i was planning a large orchard or augmenting one I would go and taste before I planted :D.

The Seedsavers help out a bit here:

with their Heritage Apple Catalogue, along with other guides. they also offer a grafting service, if you wanted to propogate your old varities to keep the line going.

I had a sion of a family tree grafted and is now growing away, and one I grew from seed that produces loads of flowers but bugger all fruit.

I also went on a grafting course in westport at Fruit and Nut. I got 7 grafted on the day and they are also growing away nicely now, but still too young for fruit. Went for Red Devil, Red Pixie, Discovery +4 others
