    Hi,

Just wondering if there is a way to block certain things from being searched on your connection?

What I mean is, in some companies you can't use Facebook, or other websites are blocked on the internet connection/computers, how would one go about doing the same at home, on a private internet connection?

Sorry if that is in anyway muddled, my brain isn't working right.

    Thanks for any help.

I wasn't sure where to post this, so apologies if I have posted it in the wrong section.

It may depend on your router but the process is very simple. Log on to your router and look for a heading that should say block services, click on it and you will get usually 3 options. Then you should have the facility to enter the ip address or addresses that you want to block. You can get the address by google.

say make of router and someone on here will no doubt have it and know exactly what it can or cant do.

of course you need to keep router secure as well!!

OpenDNS is also worth trying, which is free for home use. Basically, you set up an account on OpenDNS, install their dynamic IP updater client, configure your computer to use their DNS IP addresses and then select what services to block, e.g. Social networking.

I would also suggest setting up a non-administrator user account on your computer for who ever you are trying to limit what websites can be accessed, otherwise it's just a matter of one changing the computer's DNS settings to something else (e.g. Google's DNS servers) to circumvent the filtering.

    Thanks guys.

It's the Sierra box by Sky.

Going to try logging into the router now, if no joy, then open DNS.

Not trying to block it from a specific computer, more the actual router so the stuff cannot be accessed at all on our connection.

Got into the router and got one site blocked, new problem is, it just says that the site was blocked by the hub admin.

Any way around this so it will show a "page cannot be displayed" or something, anything at all that will not saying it was deliberately blocked?

The following should do this trick on a Windows PC. I'm not sure the process for a Mac.

    1. Look for Notepad in the start menu, right-click it and click "Run as administrator"
    2. Go into File -> Open.
    3. In the 'File name:' field, type: %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
    4. Click Open.
    5. At the very end on a new line, type in: 127.0.0.1 domain
    6. Change 'domain' with the website to block and repeat for each one you wish to block. You'll need to cover both www and non versions, e.g. 127.0.0.1 facebook(dot)com, then 127.0.0.1 www(dot)facebook(dot)com, etc. if you wish to block facebook (Replace (dot) with . - This forum doesn't let new users type links.)
    7. Save your host file and then try accessing the domains you blocked. You might need to reboot for this to take effect.

If you dont want this message showing I'd be sceptical as to whether its your router to play with in the first place...

Does anyone have any idea how I can block certain keywords from being searched on my router?

I've been looking for a few days now and I am struggling to find anything.

Would appreciate any help at all!
