As the title suggests, this is absolutely pathetic. Especially considering this week is Mental Health Week in UCC, the only university in Ireland which is apparently a "five star university"

According to the article they weren't refused treatment, there was no one on duty at the time to treat them.

It was an emergency though, and as a student myself, I know that when the building is open there is always someone on duty. During the meningitis outbreak last year they refused a person an appointment for 2 weeks who had all the symptoms.

To be honest I think we need more information on this incident before we pass judgement. I find it very difficult to believe that some-one would be point blank turned away after a suicide attempt.

Is it possible that the student, owing to his severe anxiety could have misinterpreted what was done/said?

Well the opening hours seem to correspond with the idea.

It was the thing everybody was encouraged to do via facebook, twitter, emails etc.

If the health centre couldn't offer the student an appointment at that time (bearing in mind that we don't know what time this happened, who was on duty and what other appointments were scheduled for that day) and if it was an emergency, why would they offer an appointment for a later date? The article mentions that the student was advised to go to the Mercy Hospital, which is at most a 20 minute walk. They are a hospital and will be equipped to deal with this at most times of the day, as opposed to a university health centre which generally operates as a free service for less pressing matters. I'm not trying to be harsh or belittle the student in question's situation, but why didn't they follow the advice given to them and go to the hospital? If I had a major issue and had the choice between a university health centre and a hospital, I know which one I'd go for.
