Tax in a new job

I'll start by saying I know very little about the tax laws or anything to do with tax, it will become obvious anyway.

So I'm starting a new job soon, I was told that I don't have to start paying tax for this job until the new year, is this correct?

Also I was self employed but not anymore. How much earnings do you have to make per year while self employed to be taxed on?

If you havent woked all year you will have a years worth of tax credits to be set against two months tax.
