I'm having a major brain fart tonight, just can't wrap my head around the different licences and requirements before I can drive, can someone explain it to me like the idiot that I am?!

Basically, I have never driven before. I am studying for the theory test. Am I right in thinking that I need to pass the theory test to get my learners permit, which I need before I can actually drive? Or do I need to get lessons in between the theory test and the learners permit? And do the lessons really have to be 2 weeks apart?! I need to start driving asap, and will need my full licence cos I work night shifts and will be driving alone.

Yup. All the details of what you need are here:

You can't drive until you have the permit, no instructor will even let you get a lesson.

    Nope.

You will need your Learners Permit before you can do lessons. To get this you will need to pass your Theory Test, get an eye test and fill in some forms.

There does not need to be 2 weeks between lessons, I've never heard of this! I would recommend getting as much practise as you can between lessons. Good idea to get insured on a car, doesn't have to be your own.

You cannot actually do your test until you've had your Learner Permit for 6 months and 12 lessons completed.

Yes you need to be insured on the car that you will buy, regardless of what kind of licence you have, in order to drive it.

DO I need to have any insurance for learning to drive (i.e the instructors car)? I will obviously need it before I practice driving in my dads car ofc

If you do your lessons in the car of an official instructor, you are automatically insured under their insurance policy. If you are driving someone elses car (such as the car of a friend or family member) then you have to be insured on their cars before you can drive it. This entails them ringing up their insurance company, adding you on to their policy and paying whatever the additional cost is for having a learner driver on their policy.
