    Would it look gammy to use this timber for a painted shelf in an alcove? Am going to route out slots for the supports

    It would depend on the alcove and the style of it. 2 inches is a very thick shelf, but in the right circumstances could look great.

    Depends on the design. One could be fine but ten too clunky. On the flip side most design failure in bookshelves is installing shelves that are too thin and beginning to sag. To get a chunky look its better to use 1 " stock and glue a support under the front edge.
