    • I gather they need a PPS number to register a tenant with the PRTB.
    • Contact info is not unreasonable,
    • References is not unreasonable

    If the rent is disclosed in advance, proof ok income is maybe ok

    They are not allowed ask for PPS until they offer it to you.

    Maybe the agent just wants to make sure you meet the criteria to rent a property from them before they go showing you round their apartments and wasting everybody's time...? As others have said you don't have to give it to them but likewise they don't have to accept you as a client....

    You can't force them to show you the apartment OP
    You dont have any bargaining tools
    You can supply the evidence or they'll just show the apartment to somebody who will
    The ball is in your court

    This ever increasing list of demands from letting agents for viewing is really beginning to get out of hand.

    I'd be interested to hear the opinion of the Data Protection Commisioner:
    data shall be adequate, relevant and not excessive in relation to the purpose or purposes for which they were collected or are further processed

    Thanks, it does look like the OPs letting agency are seriously overstepping.
    We accepted that personal data concerning bank details, PPS numbers and utility bills could be requested once the applicant had been accepted as a tenant. In October 2014, the letting agency confirmed, following our investigation, that it had ceased the requesting of this personal data prior to the property being let and it undertook that it would only request this information once the tenant had been accepted. The complainant informed us that she was very satisfied with the outcome of her complaint.

    This case study is a classic example of the temptation of some data controllers to collect a whole range of personal data in case they might need it in the future. In this case, the letting agency collected a significant amount of personal data from every applicant who expressed an interest in renting a property even though, at the end of the process, only one applicant could be accepted as the new tenant and it was only in the case of that successful applicant that the full range of personal data was required.

    I'd have a problem providing that level of information up front full stop.

    It's unnecessary and clearly breaches the DPC guidance.

    It's a renters market so if you kick up a stink they'll not take you on so it all depends how desperate you are to get the place.

    If you tell him your rights and he plays hardball I'd be reporting him to whomever the relevant body is.
