'01 Avensis 1.6 - mis-firing, engine light on

Driving to the shops this morning I felt a slight 'bump' like a misfire and then she began running very uneven and the engine light came on.
Went back home and had a look under the bonnet but nothing obvious.
Checked the spark plugs and there's oil on three of them - not sure how - but they all have the same white-ish appearance at the tip.
Cleaned them up and started the engine again and still the same mis-fire but otherwise smooth - no rattles or bangs.

There's 190,000 on the clock but she drove Leitrim-Cork-Leitrim at the weekend with no issues so any suggestions what might be wrong?
Is there anything else I can check before the mechanic gets a call?

    Thanks

Could be a bad coil pack or spark plug. Start the car the disconnect each one in turn. When you disconnect each one obviously the car should run worse. If any one of them makes no difference to the running that coil pack/plug is likely to be bad.

Did you notice if there was oil in the 'well' for the plugs before you removed them ? That would appear to be where the oil came from .
As nd said it most likely a coil pack that has failed.

Yeah, I'm guessing the oil is in the well as it's clean.

The best diagnostic tool now would be a diagnostic scan given you have an engine management light.

Finally got a replacement coil today and the misfire is gone.

Engine light is still on which I suppose needs to be reset but otherwise back in business.

Also a previous thread about a sticky calliper in the same car - replacing the ABS unit sorted that.

    So thanks for the replies.

Light could go off of its own accord after a few days .
Have seen it happen in a few cars.

Pull the EFI fuse out for a couple of minutes.

    Light should go off. :)
