The Naturally Aspirated engine RIP

We've all seen it coming, but it's going a bit quicker than I thought and the end is nigh.

BMW no longer make any naturally aspirated engines. Not a single one. Surely most other mass car producers will follow. Eventually even exotic cars will all be turbo charged.

The end of an era, I know emissions legislation leaves manufacturers little choice, but that doesn't make me any happier about it. Goodbye to the glorious engines of yesteryear. We will miss you. And welcome to the new generation. In 10 years time we will all be driving a 0.5l 2 cylinder Kia or the richer folk a 1.0l 3 cylinder BMW...

It's already started, if anyone had said 5 or 10 years ago that one day they will put a 1.0 3 cylinder into a Mondeo, people would think your on drugs.

Tbh I had a polo tsi on hire for a week and although nearly gutless in the low gears and a bit of turbo lag in the others it was a cracker of a car and quite rev happy.
But I agree, more things to go wrong also.

That's a cracker of an engine, I've had the 1.4 TSI single turbo in a VW Touran (7 seat MPV) rental car and it was more than adequate. But as you say, very low down (below where the turbo kicks in) there is shockingly little torque. This is the same for any turbocharged engine

A big N/A engine on the other hand has plenty of its torque available at idle.Or as Bentley said about 100 years ago: There is no replacement for displacement!

Theres no v12 in the g11 7er , the 750 is now a turbo v8, although a nice one at that, the 740 is a straight 6, jaysus id even say the v8 isnt long for this world.

Do Mercedes-Benz have much NA stuff in their lineup? I know the latest SLK 55 AMG is a naturally aspirated V8 and I think the 3.5 V6 petrol from the E-Class is too. But I think the new A/CLA/GLA class are all turbo engines, probably the same for the rest of the new ranges soon enough, that V6 could be out the door next (do they even sell it in Ireland?).

In regards to a V12 7, it is possible BMW has one in the works, the S-Class has one and BMW wouldn't like to be behind. They can also share the V12 tech with Rolls Royce so I'm still hoping to see a V12.

For the mundane stuff its a positive imo, NASP petrol family cars were always by and large gutless.

Fair play to Audi for still using the V10, although its days are no doubt numbered. It is easy to mourn the likes of the legendary Ferrari V12 engines that will soon be gone too, but how often do you get to see / hear / drive one of those?

The Audi, BMW and to a lesser extent Lexus V10 racing engines are cars you do see sometimes. And hear. And maybe even drive. And maybe just maybe even own one day. I was lucky to drive a BMW M6 earlier this year and I'll never forget the scream of that V10 engine at full throttle. And the power through the rear wheels! My children are unlikely to ever experience driving a car with an engine like that...

The 2.5 4 cylinder currently in the IS300h is to be replaced by a 2.0 Turbo unit.

    The 750 has been a V8 since the E65.

Don't think we have to worry, there is almost certainly a V12 for the 760 on the way, likely from the Wraith, twin turbo too. But even that is no longer NA.

It's cycles; In 20 years time, we'll be lamenting the extinction of the turbo engines in favour of whatever new / more convenient technology hits the market. We already had a "turbo era" in the '80s and guess what - when all manufacturers started moving to NA engines, everyone were mourning the "death" of the compressors...

You sure? They usually keep the turbo engines for the non hybrids such as NX200t. I assume this would be a IS200t and replace the current IS250.

Its not the widespread use of forced induction that worries me but rather the thought of 2 and 3 cylinders engines becoming the accepted norm with "exotic" 4 cylinder engines being reserved for range topping models.

Fast forward a couple of years and the majority on here will be praising 1.5 3cyl Bmw 3 and 5 series just like they did with the 1.0 ford ecoboost

Don't think Bentley will be changing too quick. I'm sure they'll still describe the power output as "adequate"

Lexus are moving towards hybrids/turbos. The only exception is the 5L V8 they do in the RCF but how long more will that be going.

? Bentley have been using turbos and superchargers for quite a while.

It's amazing it's taken this long really, it's a long time since turbos were reserved for performance models. Try finding a non turbo diesel these days.

I see the new Ferrari F12tdf is making massive power from a naturally aspirated V12.
