Finish recommendations for painted kitchen table

Hi all. I have an old table from the early 1980s with a rock-hard wood melamine-type finish. It's gone a little worn over the years so I've filled any imperfections, sanded it down and applied a primer and am ready to paint (Rustoleum painters touch aerosol finish http://www.lenehans.ie/painters-touch-spray-paints.html). I think that final painted coat will need some sort of a protective glaze/varnish/polyurethane/lacquer and I've absolutely no idea what.

Obviously with it being a kitchen table it has to be able to take a fair bit of wear and tear and some heat from a plate or a mug. Does anyone got any product/application recommendations? I don't have a spraying booth or anything like that so it would have to be aerosol or hand-painted on.
