Hi everyone. I have a 10 Skoda Octavia 1.6 . Recently I got a letter re the emission scandal. Yesterday my EGR Valve went. Are the two issues linked. The Skoda garage said the part will be €400 not including labour. I know nothing about cars so I am just wondering has anyone any advise ..... Thanks

No, as fas as I know receiving a letter very rarely causes the EGR to fail. ;)

No connection I'm afraid, just poor engineering. You may get a better price at an Indy.

Dummind him Angela, he's a sauer Kraut because his beloved Dieselpanzerdampfekraftwagenen have been demonstrated to be about as well-engineered as a Perodua Axia built the weekend after an earthquake. :pac:

Same thing happened in my 1.6tdi Audi. Maybe enquire with a few different indy garages as the labour for mine was eye wateringly expensive, ironically mine went when i was on the way to get the car serviced, !!

What's the mileage, and have the garage put in a goodwill claim?

If the mileage is low enough, then Skoda may contribute something towards the repair.

Unfortunately, it's a common issue on a lot of cars with EGR's. It has to be positioned close to the exhaust, so is constantly heating up and cooling down when the engine runs - this causes the metal to expand and contract and eventually leads to leaks and subsequent failure.

I know new Opel's have much more substantial heat shielding around the EGR now, so hopefully they'll last a bit longer.

This happened my wifes '10 Octavia too, it seems to be a common fault with them. Give Skoda Ireland a call, they covered the cost of the parts so it only cost €400 for labour.

Tell me about it. It's much the same with slightly eccentric old English cars. :D
