I've a first calving red Lim Hfr out of a Br Friesian cow.
She's due to calve in a few days and shes putting down a big springing.
When I checked her tonight I noticed that 3 of her teats are getting big and hard like bottles.
So hard in fact you couldn't even draw from them. Theres no heat or massive hardness in her quarters like you'd associate with mastitis.
Neighbour reckons they'll soften and open for milk when she calves but I'm not so sure....

    Any similar experiences?

Stick your finger deep into the side of the quarter, when you pull back your finger if it leaves a dimple for a seckond or two it's fine. If it cums back out straight away and leaves no dimple it's probably mastitas.

Being a first calver it sounds like she is just flagging down.

The actual quarters aren't hard apart from the springing but the teats are as big and hard as rubber bullets...
The calf will need a gob as big as Dolly Partons kids by the looks of it

If no hear or soreness don't be concerned.

What Mad says is true if its flagging. Oedema is what it's also called and he's dead on about the finger test
