    Hi,

Today I scratched another drivers car. I am a novice driver so I have no experience dealing with this kind of thing. Obviously I am going to pay for the damage, but I more looking for advice on how to handle the situation. We exchanged phone numbers and the other driver took photos of my reg and insurance disk. I took the same and of the damage. We agreed to meet up at a garage to get a quote. Is there anything else I should do to protect myself from being absolutely cleaned out. The scratch was pretty much the whole length of the passenger door on a 10 year old car, would anyone have any price range so that I can be somehow prepared when I meet the driver again?

The cheapest way out would be to replace the door, with a second hand door of the same colour. you would probably be looking at something like 250 euro for the door plus fitting it.

I will stress though, this would be the cheapest option. Be prepared to pay much more if they dig their heels in and demand car hire, personal injuries, further damages etc.

The other driver is entitled to get the car back to as good as it was, sadly for you this could involve respraying the whole side of the car.

Not many drivers would accept a door off another car being put on as-is.

Thanks for both replies. It's looking like they know a mechanic who will do the work, just worried that I will be taken advantage of

At the end of the day, if you choose to not go through insurance, you're pretty much obliged to pay whatever it costs. It mightn't be too bad if it's someone they know.
Did you get a pic of the damage. Might be worth getting quotes for the work for comparison.
You might be pleasantly surprised though.

I have pictures. Would I be able to get an accurate quote just from pictures?

No. And remember that the person whose car is damaged is entitled to chose whoever they want to do the repair

Do you mind me asking where you got the work done?

Just hope he's reasonable. He can get it repaired wherever he wants. If you're not happy then leave it to insurance.
