Hi all, just looking for some help in relation to a gable or hip roof. I am in the process of getting plans drawn up for a house. the house will be max 2300 square foot and is out the country. Just wondering if anyone has any feedback in relation to which of these roofs would be the best to go for in relation to cost etc thanks

Aesthetically I always preferred the hip roof.
But cost wise a gable roof is more cost effective also worth bearing in mind while designing your house a gable ended house will give you a lot more scope for an attic conversion/3rd story later on. Just make sure the joists and rafters are rightly sized from the outset.

I much prefer the look of gables myself.

I would also agree with Bonzo that they provide a lot more flexibility at attic level than hips.

I have no idea cost wise which is best but I don't think you should base this decision on cost. The two different roof types dramatically change the look of a house.

    Hi OP

What's the wind like in your neck of the woods?

I live in the wild west and we have a hip roof. Never lost so much as a tile. Next door not so much and they regularly lose the odd one every couple of years.

    Gable

What county ? Have you consulted the local planning guidelines?

Rural Irish average houses Traditional didn't have hipped roofs.

Was in the Museum of Country Life in Castlebar the other week and saw a piece on this. Hip roofs were more common in the west and south of the country years ago. However we're talking about different times and different sizes of houses!!

For me a gable looks the part in rural areas and can be made clean and tidy without the plastic stuff!

Gables, all day long. If for no other reason than cost.

Half-hips' are the work of the devil completely.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Depends on the style of the house.
High pitched hips look wrong, as do low pitched gables.

I am going to go for the gable roof, at least I have the option of further expansion and they look pretty good too
