I am thinking of putting an eleven speed crankset on my 10 speed bike.
Should I use a ten speed or eleven speed chain?

I'm in a similar position and about to match a full 11s group to a 10s crank, using 11s chain. So, Match the chain to the rear mech and cassette, I reckon.. I think the 11s chainrings will handle a 10s chain far better then t'other way around.

I have an 11 spd crankset with a 10spd groupset. No issues. All Shimano 105.
    Edit: 10 spd chain too.

Chain width is what you need to look out for here. Internally - so the teeth can glide properly into the gaps in the chain - and externally - so the chain can in the gaps between cogs on the cassette.

The higher the number of speeds, the narrower the chain. So an eleven speed chain will work fine with any cassette 11 speed or less. And will probably work fine with an 11 or 10 speed crankset, but below that you may start to hit issues because the teeth on the crank may be too large for the 11-speed chain.

A 9 speed chain though will work fine with an eleven speed crank, but won't work with an 11 speed cassette (and will be quite iffy with a ten-speed).

Match the chain to the cassette, not the crankset.

10spd cassette requires 10spd chain which will work fine with an 11spd crankset.

Had a narrower campag 10sp chain on a 9sp triple crankset and the only issue was that occasionally the chain would fall between between the rings when going from big to middle ring.

That's because they're NOT compatible. Wouldn't it have been simpler just to get the correct chain? The thinner chain would also have been wearing the cassette and chainrings at a greater rate than the correct chain.

Was upgrading an old 9sp xenon group to 10sp veloce on a piecemeal basis, so the chain was the correct match for the cassette, and the chain rings were actually 10 speed, just not ultra narrow as per the 10 speed chain. I hadn't realised that campag had two widths of 10sp chain at the time. I can't see how it would affect wear as AFAIK the internal dimensions are the same.
