Clean and prime the walls first, Skim the wall with the tile adhesive.its alot better than skimcoat plaster.i wouldnt use premixed adhesive, its not as good as the powder adhesive

If the surface is raw plasterboard, just tile away. No need for any sealer / pre-treatment.

When you say skim with the adhesive,do you mean skim, let it dry,and then use more for the tiles. What would be good to prime the wall,,what I have looked at already is pva,and from what I read, its not ideal for using with wall tiles..I thought of just a paint primer, but maybe that wouldn't be the best?

Read the instructions on the bag to see what the limit is (some you can use up to 20mm I believe) Dont use primer unless is a fresh coat of plaster you are tiling onto rough up any very smooth places with a grinder

PVA can be bad if not used properly .if priming the wall with pva use 7 parts water to one part pva.this will ensure
the surface is primed but yet the adhesive gets through the primer and bonds to the wall.best primer is bal APD primer.[not much value in buying apd primer for a small job ]

In your case if your tiling on to cement based plaster with the skim coat gone off.i would clean the surface ensuring there is no dust on it and it has a good base for the adhesive to take to.
instead of priming, i could apply powder based adhesive to the wall with maybe a 6 or 8mm notched trowel scratching in well.then put an another skim or notch of adhesive on the back of the tile and then apply the tile to the wall bedding it in well.the amount of adhesive used will depend on the depth required.you will know the depth required after you fit the first tile.i.e,whether you have too much adhesive applied or too little, hope this helps
