Distressed Toad

As the title says I found a distressed toad in my back yard.
He looks healthy enough.I have him in a perforated plastic box.
Is it ok to leave him free in the garden or is there a toad sanctuary or something.

    What should I do?
I posted in the Animal and Pet section but didn't get an answer.

How do you mean distressed? Is he injured or something?

    Lick it.

    Into shape.

I assume you are in the UK, as we only have the natterjack toad in Kerry and it's rare.

Put it back outside in an area with dense cover. It will be fine.

Not injured but more pissed off at my two dogs who had him cornered.

He's probably just in a state of shock. Maybe keep him in for the night, and try and release him in the morning when he's calmed down.

i saw a toad in the garden today,
    lying on it's belly
i wondered if it'd like to come inside
and see what's on the telly...

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I heard they're very fond of a straw.

Probably distressed because you have it in a box

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 32,688 ✭✭✭✭ytpe2r5bxkn0c1

    Im in Tipp.

Then it's a Frog and not a Toad. Just release it in a quite part of the garden.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,740 ✭✭✭dirtyden

Free him somewhere quiet and a bit boggy/swampy.

He is going to only get more distressed in a box inside a house.

Frogs and toads are great, glad you were able look after him.

Ah I think it's very nice that you took him in OP, unfortunately I don't know anything about frogs/toads. Maybe keep him in the box overnight and see how he is in the morning? You could look up what frogs eat and put a little bit in the box for him and if he's grand tomorrow them maybe release him and keep your dogs inside for a bit. Otherwise I'd say you could bring him to a vet if you think he's injured.

Let it go, put it somewhere where the dogs can't get at it.

Do not keep him in a box overnight. Let him out asap.

Technically, as they are a protected species, you are committing an offence by not releasing it, unless sanctioned by NPWS.

He may die over night if you leave him in a box. Put him out in the garden and let nature look after him...at least he'll be free even if an owl does swoop on him! But hey that's life!!

This is it. It's about the size of a fist.
I'm living in a housing estate so I wouldn't feel right releasing back into the garden.
    Sorry for the sideways pics.

    From the link
Amphibians spend the majority of their life on land and are often found in gardens, sometimes hundreds of metres from the nearest waterbody. Common Frogs are frequently found in urban areas and gardens are an important amphibian habitat in their own right.

If the animal is trapped or in danger e.g. youve found it near a road or in a part of the garden youre working on release it into a nearby suitable habitat or another part of the garden. Choose somewhere that provides cover from predators and extreme weather, such as in a compost heap, underneath a garden shed or near/underneath dense foliage; it does not need to be in a pond.

If your garden does not seem amphibian-friendly you could move the animal to your neighbours garden (with permission) or to the nearest suitable habitat. Try not to move the animal more than a mile from where you found it. You may like to think about making your garden more beneficial for amphibians.

Right,I've released him in a quiet part of the garden.

I'd swear I heard him ribbit FREEDOM as he sprung from the box.

    God speed sweet prince.

He is a cutie!! Well done for caring for him. He even looked quite pleased with himself in his little Tupperware Kingdom!

Glad he's free now though. Was probably missing his wee family!!

Kiss him. He'll probably turn into a handsome prince. Its usually most effective if you pucker up on their a**ehole.

"Distressed Toad" is what Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark would have been called if I was their manager. This is a perennial and deep regret of mine.

You are only allowed to kiss horny toads. Don't think you get them in Ireland.

Out of interest how are you so sure that's a frog. It's a bad photo anyway but it looks a lot deeper bodied and fatter than any frog I've ever seen.

Buy a camera and some editing software. Prod him with something and film him jumping.
Over the next few days make a compilation and edit it to jump jump by kriss kross.
Then put it on youtube and post the link here so that i may be mildly amuzed for a few seconds.
    Get to it.

Celtic tiger 2 is on the way. You have secured yourself a distressed property for no outlay. You sir, are now only a year, maybe two, from attaining life-time financial security. Well done.

What's that ,now? You released it? oh. FFS! School boy error!

All joking aside, well done for taking a little time out to look after the little fella.

    Nice one.

    Thats what I thought.
He wasn't slimey like the frogs I remember of yesteryear and was about the size of an Amber Leaf box.

For many reasons. It looks like a frog in all respects (you mustn't see many). It certainly does not look like a toad. We don't have toads anyway.
