Quality assurance went here earlier in the year due to fathers bad health amongst other things. In the process of arranging an audit to get it sorted out again.
What are the main things to look out for. Is it all about the paperwork or what are the on farm things that really stand out

    movements, remedies even more so!
outside, resonable tidy yard, effluent going where its meant to be, meal storage, vermin control, sketch of yard, adaquate water supply, not a load of cattle missing tags, medicine cabinet (locked) sharps/syringes container

As long as it's got a lock on it you should be fine.

We had our inspection last Monday, (same guy as 18 moths ago - he told us that it will be someone else next time as they can't visit same farm three times in a row), don't forget worm dose for dogs & first aid kit for the farm.
We converted the old dairy into our veterinary room, it's a locked shed so no need for a lock on the fridge, locked jvc medicine cabinet in there too, make sure to check that no out of date doses in cabinet & have an container for used needles.
Don't forget foot bath & signs. For vermin control, have a map of the yard showing where the boxes are situated and we photocopy a page of a diary showing the full year and mark off when the boxes were checked. Make sure you have a farm safety statement(free online).
They check a feed docket or two against recorded entries in the bord bia book, checked when one of the last animals slaughtered last was vaccinated/ dosed, he read a few tag numbers and checked them against card & herd register and purchases docket.
As this was our third inspection, everything was there just to double check dates on vaccines & vermin control record and update farm safety statement to include new machinery additions since it was last done.

Very important that they can see withdrawal date of drugs etc. They normally look for an animal you sold and check the withdrawal date was up before you sold it.

26 cattle went to factory last Sunday so only 8 animals left at the moment.
No vet here all year thank god. So not a lot to see there. It's last year I'm worried about. Unaware to me the medicine record not maintained. Got statement of medicine from the vet the other day going back to start off of 2013 tag numbers attached to some treatments but not all.
So should I try work back as best I can where I might make a mistake or just explain my story and look for a clean start.
    Movements book is bang on.

If your bord bia cert had ended, and you reapplied all medicines etc have to be up to date from that date of re applying(open to correction, but fairly sure)

You mean your neighbours/sisters dog who you are only keeping for a few days. And with the rat bait maps etc, if you got any farm cats then surely you don't need any rat bait because they so such a good job.

You need to polish up that crystal ball that you're gazing into :)

They will want to see where you dosed cattle, or vaccinated a bunch. First aid kit outside.

My last one everything was photgraphed and I mean everything. (That can no longer happen from this month I believe). Make sure you have records for everthing esp vet mediciene receipts. Make sure your withdrawal periods are correct my guy checked about 10 drugs to make sure was a 28 day period for example and that date of withdrawal period was 28 days lattrer. I got points off for having date 29 days instead of 28! All cats must be wormed and have a worming record. Proper lockable bait boxes no tubes allowed. Signs up, farm safety statement. Make sure you have batch number for feed and supplier mine was checked. Cattle looked at briefly too check tagged properly etc. All in all make sure everthing perfect! Inspectors vary mine was a stickler some are a hell lot less but think all getin stickier.

    http://www.vmd.defra.gov.uk/ProductInformationDatabase/

handy site used a few time when bottle gone and not put down the withdrawal period. The other big thing is remember to state all amounts keft of medicine in your records and have it there. ie if 10 animals were geting 25 ml each out of a 500 ml bottle you are meant to 250 ml in the medicine cabinet I had show that was well. Just came back to me how awkard he was. Hah an ag inspector 2 months before and he was easier than the QA guy

="barnaman;97652769"Proper lockable bait boxes no tubes allowed..

Are you sure if this - if so bad news here bad news.
I put up a batch of tubes specially for this inspection the ones that you can easily see the level of grain drop as it is eaten

Is one item wrong a fail or a minor infringement that has to be sorted by next inspection.

Cats wormed? - The types of cats that are any good at killing rats are uncatchable never mind doseable

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 682 ✭✭✭barnaman

Re Locked Rat boxes. Yeah pretty sure its not so much a QA thing as a legal requirement (1) Health and Safety so children etc cannot accidently access it and ingest it and (2) prevent accidental posioning of non target species ie a hedgehog eating it. Not sure what tubes you have sound not the ususal silage tube with a bit of Storm in it.

Re Cats you have to have a vermin control plan so that either proper baiting etc or cats lots of lads said cats and soon as say that the lad would say right show me the worming records. Not matter cannot catch them put powder ot pill in their food.

the guy just asked here tubes or boxes, I said both, he didnt ask to see them. Also records of all drugs/dosing that have been bought, ie invoices or vets bill. Items are in different categories, an automatic fail would be having no records done, some things are only minor items iykwim

This passed for me. There is a child proof cap on it. Cut out the holes either end and drill two big holes under lid to drop in the bait. Seal and stick with tech7.

O yeah they would be a1 anything child cannot get at the poison will be grand. Those look at lot better than boxes; you can see as you said what going. Sick to death of opening bait boxes.

Fails would be dodgy vet/medicine or feed supplies. Footbath or signs not up etc would hit you but not fail you.

Just wondering if anyone finds the herdwatch app handy for keeping medicine records for QA audit and do you still have to keep the book up to date. Was thinking about getting it!

use herdwatch for feed records and medicines just gave the laptop to the auditor and he took all he wanted from it, didn't ask to see any invoices or records

only use the bord bia book for the sheep records

think herdwatch might be giving a free trial period now

Due 2nd audit under the dairy assurance during coming week. Same old **** when a large amount of dairy lads have yet to compete their first. Will continue to wait patiently for the benefits to flow my way.
When this schemes beef version was used to devalue my freisian bullocks (reared to a top quality standard ill have ye know) all was in it for me was " sure you'll get them killed quicker than non assured".

There are a few horses here are they ignored

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 682 ✭✭✭barnaman

Same here Hugh yeah they are or were ignored sheep were ignored too as not in QA for them. Cats and dogs looked at as the nematodes I think thats the name ie worms they get unless dosed can infect cattle.

From visual point of view around the yard apart from being clean and tidy are the following the basic requirements

    Sign
    Footbath
    Bait Points
    Locked Medicines
