Free to air on satellite, as per my HD combo receivers at home. Can't advise on whether it can be added on a sky receiver.

It's a free-to-air channel so can be watched for free on satellite. It's not on Sky's Irish epg but can be added and viewed via Other Channels.

Find it odd that Sky does have the SD versions of BBC Three and Four but not HD (even though they do have BBC One and Two HD).

    It's pretty unusual alright,
    - We had (standard definition) BBC One and BBC Two for about ten years before we got BBC Three and BBC Four
    - We get no BBC One and Two regional variations
    - We get a different regional variation of BBC One HD than BBC One SD (England HD, NI SD)
    - We don't get the BBC News channel or BBC Parliament

They're all FTA channels and RTÉ don't seem to have any problem with BBC on Sky showing some of the same programs like TV3 did about UTV/ITV

its annoying that BBC Three HD and BBC Four HD as well as BBC News not available on Sky Ireland EPG. Surely it's easy for them to add the news as there are no copyright issues involved.

Luckily i get BBC News via Freeview overspill but the reception isn't always the best. Hopefully the bbc will add it for Irish viewers at some point.

What about BBC Three in general, isn't that channel meant to be shuting down soon?

The BBC won't add it. Sky will need to pay them and does Sky want to pay for a Sky News competitor.
