Hey guys quick question. My bro has nct today. Car doesn't have insurance policy on it, does my open drive policy cover me to drive it or does car actually have to have its own insurance policy? Thanks!

When you say "open drive" do you mean using an extension of your policy to drive a car not owned by you?

If so you would need to check the T&Cs as to whether it is third party only or comp on the other car or if you have the benefit at all.

As far as I know there is no usual requirement for the other car to have its own policy but the extension of your policy will only cover it when you're actually driving so if you park it up etc. it's at risk.

I'd also take some proof that you don't own the car in case you get stopped.

Ok guys thanks for replies. I rang 123.ie I am covered at third party level ... Next question , does the car have to be taxed to get nct? I think my bro has it declared off road, which it has been...

If you want to drive it it will need to be taxed of course.

I know on my policy I have 3rd party insurance on any privately insured car

If the car is uninsured I don't have cover on it. I would check again with 123

Under the new rules I believe the car has to be declared off the road in advance of not taxing it. Was this done

Are you really just looking for boards permission to drive a car with no insurance/tax/nct ;)

You are going to have a very difficult conversation with the guards if they stop you. I wouldn't take the risk myself. Why stress yourself out over a few shekels? If your plan is to put the car back on the road then wouldn't taxing be a worthwhile step?

Well he is either right or wrong.
If he has got confirmation from his own insurer that his extension covers him 3rd party, then he is insured.
Some insurers insist on car being road legal - current tax and test for extension to be valid but I believe that is only for additional benefits such as fully comp when using the extension.
Anyway if the op takes his own policy with him and has some form of confirmation from insurer as to cover. If he has nct booking and declared off the road, and if he ha s permission of owner I believe he could be legal.

are you sure? usually the case is that if there is a pre-existing policy on the car that covers you, that cover takes precedence?

To be road legal all a car needs is a valid NCT, it's going to the NCT so that's OK.

Regarding driving of other cars, assuming it is covered on your policy then all you need is a valid NCT if required, insurance companies always insure driving other cars on TPFT only, you do not need valid tax or the car to already have an insurance policy to be covered.

I'm not sure if I understand what you are asking but yes in the t&c on my fully comp it said third party cover on any privately insured car

I suppose it's there as an attempt to make sure any car you are driving is roadworthy. Basically giving themselves another way out of paying a claim

If it is declared off the road and you drive it to the NCT then that is an issue as it isn't off the road and needs valid tax.

As far as I'm aware, the only time a declared off the road car can be on the road is when going for testing

My apologies, yes there are two exemptions, going to the NCT or bringing the car for repairs!

    I'm going to correct myself

I haven't looked at the t&cs in a while and it's not there now. It definitely was a couple of years back because I had a specific reason to check it

    So kudos to you guys

Could have a really simple conversation with them if he just phoned his local station and asked...

It does need to be SORDed though. This exemption is specifically for NCTing SORD vehicles.
