Can anyone help with this 4th class puzzle please.

The bus stops at the castle on its way to the park. Connor and Katie got onto the bus.
Connor handed the bus driver €1 and the bus driver said,"Castle or Park? "
Katie also handed the bus driver € 1 and the bus driver gave her a ticket to the park without asking any questions.
The driver did not know either of the children. Why might he have asked Connor where he was going but not Katie?

    Fares:
    Castle: 70 cent
    Park: €1

Katie handed the bus driver 1 euro in change, ie 50c, 20c, 20c, 10c.

I have a few puzzles that I use when I'm doing substation classes - I'm going to use this one. It will be interesting to see how many students get it and how the various year groups handle it... Well done frigatting

I think the question is open to ambiguities so I would rephrase it if it's given to a class again.

If the bus stops at the castle and picks up Connor and Katie then why the heck would he be asking either of them if they were going to the castle when he has just arrived there!

I reckon the bus driver just realised that he was already at the bloomin castle after asking Connor, so when it came to Katie then the only place she can go to is the park.

Maybe also stipulate that both Connor and Katie knew what the fare was beforehand, rather than putting it as an addendum. From the story given it is also notable that Connor never responded (or we aren't being told!).. so the corollary of this is that Katie may have spoken the destination but it wasn't reported in the story. The only thing that is relayed to us at that stage is the fact that the bus driver didn't ask any questions.

I think that ambiguities can create confusion even when we don't overtly realise it. Have you ever had a niggling feeling that someone's story doesn't quite add up even though you can't say why. Maybe the people who are more confused are the ones who are more alert to ambiguities than they think, whereas folk who seem to bypass the ambiguities go for the 'expected answer', which in some ways betrays what the question is supposed to be testing.

When I gave this puzzle to the class I said that Conor handed a driver a €1 coin but Katie handed the driver €1.

It was interesting to see who copped that clue.
